Description
Dr. Indigo, also known as Dr. Indigo, is a character from the One Piece anime film Strong World and its prequel, Episode 0. He serves as a key subordinate to the legendary pirate Golden Lion Shiki, acting as the ship's doctor and a scientist for the Golden Lion Pirates. His allegiance to Shiki spans over two decades, having been with the crew during the legendary Ed War against Gol D. Roger's pirates twenty-seven years before the main storyline. After Shiki's escape from Impel Down twenty-two years prior to the film's events, Indigo reunited with his captain and began a long-term project on the floating island of Merveille, where he dedicated twenty years to developing a serum that would create a monstrous animal army for Shiki's world domination plan.

In terms of personality, Dr. Indigo embodies the archetype of an eccentric and mad scientist. He is deeply absorbed in his research, displaying a cold and ruthless side as a scientist when the situation demands, but also has a very comedic and flamboyant public persona. This dichotomy is most evident in his unusual mode of communication; he frequently attempts to convey complex information using pantomime and elaborate gestures, performing like a mime or a clown. These performances are almost always incomprehensible, leading his captain, Shiki, to demand that he just speak plainly. On the rare occasion that Shiki correctly interprets his silent act, Indigo is genuinely shocked. His laugh is a distinctive "Piro piro piro piro," and his presence is often announced by his bizarre footwear, which produces a comical, fart-like squeaking sound with each step. His appearance reinforces this clown-like theme; he has a tall, lanky frame with a prominent stomach, indigo-colored hair styled into two tufts, a white face with purple markings around his eyes, and a floating scarf that is secretly held aloft by a hidden wire. His name fits the color-based naming scheme of the Golden Lion Pirates, as indigo is a color between blue and violet.

Dr. Indigo's primary motivation is his unwavering loyalty to Shiki and his scientific ambition. He is the mastermind behind the chemical weapon SIQ, a derivative of a plant called IQ native to Merveille. This serum dramatically increases the size, strength, and aggression of the island's animals, transforming them into a formidable biological army for Shiki. His role in the story is that of a supporting antagonist. While Shiki devises the grand strategy of attacking East Blue, Indigo is responsible for the practical means to achieve that goal, working in his laboratory to perfect his chemical creations. He also acts as a combatant for the crew, personally engaging enemies. His key relationship is, without a doubt, with Shiki. Despite acting as a comedic duo where Indigo often physically and verbally reacts to Shiki's absurdities, their bond is one of profound and long-standing loyalty, surviving imprisonment and decades of isolation to see their shared ambition realized. He is also shown working alongside the crew's other high-ranking officer, the gorilla-like commander Scarlet.

Over the course of Strong World, Dr. Indigo shows little personal development, remaining a steadfast force for the antagonists until his defeat. His notable abilities are primarily scientific and chemical in nature. He is a brilliant chemist, as evidenced by the creation of the SIQ serum. In combat, he wields a sword but prefers his unique Chemical Juggling technique. This ability allows him to conjure and juggle balls of volatile, explosive chemicals, which he can launch at opponents in rapid succession. His most powerful version of this attack is called Mass Juggling, where he condenses the chemicals into a single, enormous sphere for a devastating explosion. Importantly, these pyrotechnic powers are not derived from a Devil Fruit, as he is shown to be capable of swimming. Despite his formidable chemical arsenal and extensive experience, Indigo proves no match for Roronoa Zoro, one of the Straw Hat pirates' strongest fighters. In the final battle in Shiki's palace, he is swiftly defeated by Zoro's powerful nine-sword style Asura technique and his fate afterward is left unknown.
