Description
Naraku is the primary antagonist of the series, a spider half-demon whose name means hell or underworld. He originates from the fusion of a crippled human bandit named Onigumo and a swarm of weak demons. Onigumo, after being rescued and tended to by the priestess Kikyo, became consumed by a possessive longing for her. This obsession drove him to offer his body and soul to demons in exchange for a mobile form, resulting in Naraku's birth. The new entity inherited Onigumo's malice and desire for power.

Naraku's personality is defined by cold calculation, immense cunning, and a deep enjoyment of causing suffering. He is manipulative above all else, preferring to orchestrate events from the shadows using complex schemes and disposable pawns. He rarely shows overt emotion, maintaining a calm and analytical demeanor even in crisis. However, his lingering feelings for Kikyo remain a rare point of instability, a vulnerability he actively tries to remove.

His primary motivation is to obtain all the shards of the Shikon Jewel and become a full-fledged demon, thereby securing absolute power. This desire is entwined with a twisted form of admiration for Kikyo and a need to sever the human attachments that limit him. He derives satisfaction from breaking bonds and spreading despair, seeing such acts as proof of his superiority.

Within the story, Naraku serves as the hidden hand behind nearly every major tragedy. He tricks Kikyo and Inuyasha into betraying each other, resulting in Kikyo's death and Inuyasha's fifty-year seal. He is responsible for the curse that afflicts Miroku's family with the Wind Tunnel, and he orchestrates the massacre of Sango's demon-slaying village, later using her brother Kohaku as a tool. He often adopts disguises, such as the son of Lord Kagewaki, to infiltrate and destabilize his enemies.

Key relationships revolve around his incarnations and his enemies. He creates numerous avatars from his own body, including the silent Kanna, the wind-wielding Kagura, the mind-reading Ginka, and later figures like Hakudoshi, Akago, and Byakuya. These avatars are extensions of his will, yet some develop their own desires, leading to betrayal. His archenemy is Inuyasha, whose half-demon nature Naraku despises and whose growing power he constantly tries to outmaneuver. He also maintains a complex hostility toward Kikyo's reincarnation, Kagome, and conflicts with the monk Miroku and demon slayer Sango.

Naraku undergoes significant development as he acquires more Shikon shards. His power grows exponentially, allowing him to create increasingly independent avatars, regenerate from damage, and deploy formidable barriers. He attempts to purify himself of Onigumo's heart by separating it into avatars, but this human core remains a weakness. Late in the story, he collects all shards and becomes a true spider demon, but his hubris and the desperate wishes of his heart lead to his ultimate defeat. He is destroyed when Inuyasha and Kagome purify the Shikon Jewel, ending his reign of manipulation.

His notable abilities include creating barriers that protect or reflect enemy attacks, emitting a lethal miasma that dissolves flesh and ground, summoning poisonous Saimyosho insects, reshaping his body into tentacles or splitting it into puppets, sharing vision with those puppets, and absorbing other demons to enhance his composition. He can also regenerate from most physical damage and create exact duplicates to act in his stead. The Shikon Jewel amplifies all of these powers, making him nearly invincible until the very end.
