Description
Kanato Sakamaki is the fourth son of the Sakamaki family, one of the triplets born to the vampire king Karlheinz and Cordelia, making him a brother to Ayato and Laito as well as the other sons of Karlheinz. He is a seventeen-year-old student at Ryoutei Academy, standing 165 centimeters tall with a delicate build, purple hair, and eyes of the same shade. He is almost always seen carrying a tattered teddy bear, which he treats as his most treasured possession.
Kanato is defined by a deeply unstable and volatile personality. He is prone to sudden, hysterical outbursts and frequent crying, often behaving in a childlike manner that contrasts sharply with his cruel and sadistic actions. His moods can shift without warning, and he is quick to blame others for his own distress. Despite his seemingly fragile demeanor, he possesses a sharp and venomous tongue, and when angered, he becomes fully hysterical, revealing a scheming and merciless side. His emotions are easily soothed by sweet foods, and his obsession with collecting dolls points to his deep-seated need for control and companionship.
The foundation of Kanato's twisted psychology lies in his relationship with his mother, Cordelia. He was largely ignored by her throughout his childhood, a neglect that led to a desperate, self-destructive craving for any form of her attention. He resorted to self-harm as a way to try and make her look at him, a behavior rooted in a belief that more severe injuries would earn him her concern. He was also a witness to her numerous affairs, which fostered a deep-seated distrust of women while simultaneously failing to diminish his desperate love for her. The teddy bear he always carries was a gift she casually gave him, something she herself had no use for. After Cordelia's death, Kanato preserved her ashes within the teddy bear, making it a permanent, macabre container for the mother he could not let go of.
Within the story, Kanato immediately singles out the protagonist, Yui Komori, as a target for his obsessions, viewing her as a new possession to be owned and controlled. His primary motivation in his interactions with her is to secure an unwavering, absolute devotion that he never received from his mother. This manifests as intense possessiveness, where he becomes enraged by any perceived slight or the suggestion that her attention might wander. He is a constant threat to those around her, and his role often involves creating a claustrophobic environment of psychological abuse and physical danger.
Kanato's key relationships are almost universally strained and dysfunctional. He shares a complicated bond with his triplet brothers, Ayato and Laito, expressing a mixture of love and intense hatred for them, largely due to their shared maternal connection, which he finds both binding and repulsive. He is known to threaten them with violence, such as threatening to tear Ayato apart for teasing him. His interactions with his other brothers, like the responsible Reiji or the eldest Shu, are distant and serve his own needs when convenient. His relationship with Yui is the most significant, evolving from treating her as a mere plaything to focusing his entire emotional need for companionship onto her. As his feelings grow, his possessiveness escalates to an extreme where he becomes willing to eliminate anyone who could potentially separate them, including his entire family. In a twisted form of development, he may eventually transfer his attachment from the teddy bear to Yui, seeing her as the new vessel for his emotional reliance. However, this development does not lead to a healthy relationship; it is marked by constant misunderstandings, accusations, and an absolute refusal to apologize, as he forces her to conform to his distorted reality.
As a vampire, Kanato possesses the standard abilities of his kind, including enhanced physical strength, speed, and senses, as well as accelerated healing. He has displayed a specific command over fire, using it to burn his mother's body and as a weapon against others. He is also capable of manipulating other objects, such as animating his collection of dolls to serve him. Despite his small stature, which often leads others to underestimate him, he is far from weak and is capable of extreme violence, proving he can be lethally dangerous when his fragile emotional state is pushed too far. Throughout various scenarios, his character development shows him agonizingly trying to fight against his inherent psychological distortions, making faltering efforts to care about Yui's feelings, while remaining fundamentally unable to change his core nature.
