Description
Ayame Sarutobi, often called Sacchan, is a former elite kunoichi of the Oniwabanshu, the shogunate's secret ninja force, who now works as a freelance assassin taking down those beyond the law. She is a tall, attractive woman with long light purple hair, blue eyes, and a notable tear mole beneath her right eye. Her most defining physical trait is her severe myopia; she is nearly blind without her specially made glasses and cannot distinguish living beings from inanimate objects. Even with her glasses on, her eyesight remains somewhat poor, leading to frequent comedic mishaps where she mistakes other people or objects for her target of affection, Sakata Gintoki.
Personality-wise, Ayame is loud, energetic, and extremely perverted, with a well-documented masochistic streak. This side of her personality is almost exclusively triggered by and directed at Gintoki, whose verbal abuse and physical rejection she interprets as affectionate attention. She is an obsessive stalker who constantly follows him, hides in improbable places near his office, and declares her love for him in the most inappropriate ways. Despite this comedic and seemingly shallow obsession, she possesses a strong sense of justice and takes her work as a ninja very seriously. She operates with two distinct modes: the lovestruck pig mode, which is unstable and focuses on Gintoki, and the killer mode, which is cool-headed and professional when her job is the priority.
Her motivations are overwhelmingly driven by her love for Gintoki, which began after their first encounter when he saved her from a failed mission. However, she is also motivated by a deep-seated sense of duty and loyalty, particularly to the shogun, Tokugawa Shigeshige, whom she has sworn to protect from a young age. Her role in the overall story is primarily comedic, providing adult-oriented humor through her stalker and masochistic tendencies, often in tandem with other eccentric characters like the sadistic Sogo Okita or her fellow stalker Isao Kondo. In more serious arcs, such as the Shogun Assassination Arc, her role shifts to that of a capable and deadly fighter, demonstrating her elite training and unwavering commitment to her mission.
In Gintama: The Final Movie, Ayame's role is shaped by a time skip. After Gintoki disappears, she is among the few who steadfastly believe he is still alive. To maintain a sense of normalcy and hope for his return, she refuses to change her appearance, keeping her hair and outfit exactly the same as five years prior. Her feelings for him remain unchanged, and she continues to hope for his return. During this period, she regularly visits a hospitalized Shimura Tae, her self-proclaimed romantic rival. Despite their frequent bickering, Ayame is deeply grieved by Tae's terminal illness, the White Plague, and her raw emotions show that beneath the rivalry lies a genuine and precious friendship. When Gintoki manipulates the past to create a better future, Ayame joins the final battle alongside Tsukuyo, Kyuubei, and the revived Tae. In a poignant moment, she fights to protect Gintoki but hides her tearful face from him, refusing to let him see her cry as she sends him off to complete his mission.
Ayame maintains key relationships with several characters. Her primary relationship is with Sakata Gintoki, the object of her obsessive and masochistic love. She treats him as her master, and he typically responds with annoyance and violence, though he has saved her life on multiple occasions. She has a complex relationship with fellow ninja Hattori Zenzo, having known him since childhood. While she often torments him for fun and worsens his hemorrhoids, she deeply respects him as a leader and is one of the few who understands his self-sacrificing nature. She views Shimura Tae and Tsukuyo as romantic rivals, leading to frequent clashes, but she ultimately cares for them deeply as friends, as seen in the movie. She also has a comedic rivalry with Kagura, often fueled by jealousy over Kagura living with Gintoki.
As a ninja, Ayame possesses extraordinary physical skills, agility, and lethal assassination techniques honed from childhood. Her notable abilities include exceptional accuracy with thrown kunai, which remains perfect even when she is not wearing her glasses. She is a master of stealth and infiltration, though her stalking habits often overshadow this skill in comedic situations. In combat, she uses unconventional tactics, including weaponizing her favorite food, natto, whose stickiness can instantly immobilize her enemies. She is known to carry various ninja tools, including smoke bombs and, in a nod to her masochistic personality, strange SM tools like ropes and candles. Her pain tolerance is immense, allowing her to continue fighting even when severely injured.
