Description
Alexander "Sasha" Nikolaevich Hell is the main protagonist of the story, a young Qwaser of Russian origin who wields control over the element of iron. He is a boy of about thirteen or fourteen years old with porcelain skin, silver-white hair, and Tiffany blue eyes. His most distinctive feature is a large scar on the left side of his face, shaped like an inverted Eastern Cross, which was inflicted by the Qwaser of Gold. This scar tends to bleed heavily when he draws upon his powers or becomes excited in battle, at which point his left eye also turns red.
Sasha's background is marked by significant trauma. He was held captive and trained alongside other Qwasers to harness his abilities, surviving this brutal ordeal largely due to the affection and care he received from an older girl named Olja. He later witnessed Olja's murder at the hands of the Qwaser of Gold, an event that became the primary source of his vendetta against the Adepts, the organization to which his enemy belongs. His hands are also permanently injured from digging through frozen earth to bury Olja, which is why he always wears gloves.
In terms of personality, Sasha is typically extremely cold, harsh, and serious. He has a difficult time adhering to the social mechanics and conventions of Japanese society, which often leads to frustration for those around him. He is very austere about his nickname, allowing only those close to him to call him Sasha. Despite his rough exterior, he does hide a kind heart. His demeanor can soften for his favorite dish, borscht, a traditional beet soup, which is a particular weakness of his. He is known to occasionally make situational remarks in Russian. Driven by his bitter past, his ferocity reaches its zenith whenever the Adepts target innocent people, especially his friend Tomo Yamanobe, whom he protects because of her resemblance to Olja. Throughout the series, his time living with Mafuyu Oribe teaches him to see the infinite value of human life, and he develops a growing contempt for the Adepts endangering innocents.
Sasha's role in the story begins when he is discovered in an infirm state on the grounds of St. Mihailov Academy by Mafuyu and Tomo, who nurse him back to health. He is quickly accepted into the school as a student of class 1-A and is affiliated with the Athos organization, which charges him with neutralizing hostile heretic Qwasers. His primary motivation is to avenge Olja by confronting the Qwaser of Gold and stopping his plans.
His key relationships evolve significantly over the course of the narrative. He shares a deep bond with Mafuyu Oribe, who becomes his primary source of soma, the breast milk that powers his abilities. Although he initially rejects the prospect, he and Mafuyu slowly become attracted to each other, even as they deny it when confronted. He also forms a strong protective bond with Tomo Yamanobe, seeing in her the reflection of his lost guardian Olja. Throughout his mission, he has several partners who serve as his Maria to supply him with soma, including Mutsumi Sendou, Teresa Beria, and later Hana Katsuragi. He eventually separates from Mafuyu, much to his dismay, to undertake training sessions to prepare for future confrontations.
In terms of character development, Sasha gradually changes and warms to those around him, particularly Mafuyu. He begins to understand and value human connections, moving away from his singular focus on revenge. By the end of his most serious confrontations, including a battle against the sodium Qwaser Shinichiro Ootori, he manages to reach the fourth grade of elemental control on a scale of eight. His resolve ultimately remains fixed on stopping the Qwaser of Gold, balancing his ruthless efficiency with emerging ethical considerations about collateral damage.
Sasha's notable abilities are centered on his power as the Qwaser of Iron. He can manipulate iron on a molecular level, which allows him to morph it into any form he wishes. His trademark weapon is an enormous black scythe that is at least twice his size, though his arsenal expands to include a katana-like sword that he wields in tandem. He can vibrate the atoms in iron to generate immense heat, forge alloys, or create extreme cold. His other powers include the ability to oxidize iron into rust in a fraction of a second, turn his own blood into a sword, and sense blood from several kilometers away. To activate and fuel these abilities, he must absorb soma, which he can draw from any female Maria partner.
