Description
Ryo Yamada is the bassist, backup vocalist, and primary composer for Kessoku Band. A second-year student at Shimokitazawa High School, she also works part-time at the live house STARRY alongside Nijika Ijichi. Her appearance is notably androgynous, featuring short blue hair secured by two black square hair clips on the right side of her bangs, sharp yellow eyes, and a mole on her left cheek. She typically wears her school uniform: a collared white shirt with a black ribbon, dark blue pleated skirt, black leggings, maroon or brown loafers, and a matching long-sleeved sweater. She stands 163 cm tall with an athletic build.

Born into a wealthy family operating a hospital and owning a vacation home, Ryo receives a substantial allowance. However, she frequently exhausts it purchasing musical instruments, resulting in chronic financial instability. This forces her to borrow money from bandmates, notably Hitori Gotoh, and occasionally resort to eating weeds to stave off hunger. Her interest in rock music sparked at age ten, partly as rebellion against overprotective parents, though she maintains a functional relationship with them.

Ryo exhibits a reserved, often expressionless demeanor but embraces being labeled a "weirdo." She prefers solitude and dodges unwanted social obligations with flimsy excuses, yet consistently participates in group activities with her bandmates. Despite her aloof nature, she becomes highly animated and talkative when discussing music, instruments, thrifting for clothes, or exploring abandoned places. She possesses encyclopedic music knowledge but struggles academically, excelling in exams only through intensive, short-term studying before quickly forgetting the material. Her long-term plan involves skipping university to focus on the band through part-time work, prompting her parents to consider withdrawing financial support to foster independence.

Her musical journey began in middle school with a prior band that disbanded due to creative differences after members prioritized popularity over artistic individuality. This left Ryo disillusioned with bands until Nijika Ijichi, her closest friend since middle school, invited her to form Kessoku Band. Ryo joined only on the condition that the band maintain its unique identity, firmly believing that "a band that loses its individuality is as good as dead." As Kessoku Band’s composer, she emphasizes authentic self-expression, advising Hitori Gotoh that deeply personal lyrics can resonate universally—a principle she terms the "paradox of specificity."

Ryo overcame creative slumps, like a period of writer’s block where she skipped school and work. Support from bandmates, including a backyard camping trip, helped her regain inspiration. Post-graduation, she commits fully to the band’s future despite impending financial independence from her family. Her relationships involve dependence on Nijika as her sole confidante, financial reliance on Hitori, admiration for SICK HACK bassist Kikuri Hiroi, and unintentionally attracting Ikuyo Kita, who developed a crush after their first meeting.

She plays an Olympic White Fender Precision Bass and uses the handle "World YAMADA" online. Additional details include her method of teaching guitar via printed internet lessons (dubbed the "Yamada Method"), her favorite food being curry, and her September 18 birthday—a reverse of her namesake Takahiro Yamada's (from Asian Kung-Fu Generation) August 19 birthday.
