TV-Series
Description
Aoi Kuchiba is a character known as the Qwaser of Oxygen and a member of the Adept Twelve Apostles, a group of powerful individuals within the series. Her past is marked by profound tragedy, which shapes her dual identity and her role as both an adversary and, eventually, an ally.

Background and Personality

Aoi Kuchiba was raised alongside her older brother, Yuu Kuchiba, within an Adept facility. While her brother was not recognized for having potential as a Qwaser, Aoi was chosen to become a living Maiden for a ritual. During this ceremony, her powers awakened uncontrollably, leading to a terrible accident in which she killed her brother in self-defense. Unable to process the overwhelming guilt of this act, her mind fractured, and she developed a second personality that assumed the identity of her deceased brother, Yuu. This split personality caused her to live as if Yuu were still alive, leading to her nickname, Double Face.

Before the integration of her identities, Aoi's personality was deeply layered and unstable, marked by emotional swings between calm intelligence and bouts of insanity driven by her trauma. Her "Yuu" personality was often cold, strategic, and capable of leading others, while her true self was tormented by guilt and confusion. After her two sides are later merged, she becomes more cool-headed, rational, and reserved, though she still retains traces of vulnerability, particularly around those she trusts.

Motivations and Role in the Story

Aoi's primary motivation throughout much of the story is her desperate wish to stop the murderous rampage of the personality she believes to be her brother Yuu. To this end, she contacts the Qwaser Alexander Nikolaevich Hell, known as Sasha, and begs him to kill her brother. Unbeknownst to her, she is asking him to destroy her own alter ego. Posing as her brother, she transfers to Ryounan Academy, where she gathers delinquent students and covertly monitors the activities of St. Mihailov Academy, where Sasha and his allies are based. Her role initially is that of a formidable antagonist, but this changes dramatically when the truth of her past is revealed during a confrontation with Sasha.

Key Relationships

The most significant and tragic relationship in Aoi's life is with her brother, Yuu Kuchiba. His death at her hands is the source of her psychological fragmentation, and her second personality is a direct manifestation of her guilt and inability to cope with the loss.

Her relationship with Sasha is complex and transformative. She initially seeks him out as a tool to destroy her brother, but their violent confrontations lead to a deeper connection. After he defeats her and the truth is revealed, Sasha shows her mercy, a act that profoundly affects her. Over time, she develops fondness and trust for him, even regaining a sense of her own femininity and youthfulness in his presence. She also forms bonds with other characters, including a close friendship with Fumika Mitarai and taking on the role of protector for Mafuyu Oribe after the fall of the Garden.

Character Development

Aoi's character arc is one of destruction and redemption. After her defeat and the shattering of her psyche, her body is placed in cold storage. She is later saved and revived through the efforts of the alchemist Paracelsus, a procedure that successfully seals away or integrates her Yū personality, reducing it to a voice in her head. From a tormented antagonist consumed by a split personality, she evolves into a more stable and dependable ally. She continues to struggle with self-acceptance and guilt over her past actions but ultimately finds a new purpose, fighting alongside her former enemies and even participating in normal school life events. In one of her final acts of development, she overcomes a debilitating phobia of water stemming from a childhood accident, which allows her to fully awaken her powers.

Notable Abilities

As the Qwaser of Oxygen, Aoi has the power to manipulate the element of oxygen with deadly precision. This allows her to perform a wide range of devastating attacks. She can deprive an area of oxygen to suffocate her enemies or incapacitate them by saturating their surroundings with the gas. She can also forcibly accelerate oxidation, causing objects to combust or rust almost instantly. Her tactics are often complex, such as creating highly explosive combinations of pure oxygen and combustible materials. Her only notable weakness is her terror of water, which stems from nearly drowning as a baby, making her unable to swim and vulnerable near large bodies of water unless she has assistance from a hydrogen-manipulating Qwaser.
