Description
Misuzu Kamio is the main heroine of the story. She is a teenage girl who appears to be around fifteen or sixteen years old, with very long, thick blonde hair that she usually wears in a ponytail, and deep blue eyes. She lives in a seaside town with her aunt Haruko Kamio, whom she regards as her mother. Haruko took her in after the death of her biological mother, and Misuzu's biological father is largely absent from her life.

Misuzu has a cheerful, innocent, and slightly clumsy personality. She is often described as an airhead, but she is honest, gentle, and deeply kind. She has a great love of dinosaurs that dates back to her childhood; she once believed that baby chicks were young dinosaurs. When she is troubled or about to cry, she habitually utters the phrase gao, which she imagines to be the sound a dinosaur makes. Her aunt dislikes this habit, but Misuzu continues to use it. She also has a fondness for a strange peach-pulp juice.

Beneath her bright exterior, Misuzu is profoundly lonely. She struggles to form lasting friendships because of a mysterious condition: whenever she becomes close to someone, she begins to cry uncontrollably. This affliction is rooted in an ancient curse tied to her identity as the reincarnation of a winged maiden from a thousand-year-old legend. As a descendant of this mythical figure, she carries a burden of suffering that intensifies whenever she bonds with others. Despite this, her deepest motivation is to connect with people and experience friendship and love.

Her role in the story is central. The narrative begins when she meets Yukito Kunisaki, a traveling puppeteer who comes to town for the summer festival. Misuzu immediately wants to be his friend and invites him to stay at her home. Over the course of their summer together, she falls in love with him, even though she knows that loving someone will bring her physical and emotional pain. Her desire to have a wonderful summer with Yukito drives much of her actions.

The key relationships in her life are with Yukito and Haruko. Yukito becomes her closest friend and love interest; his presence brings her joy but also accelerates the curse's effects. Haruko is a maternal figure who cares for Misuzu deeply but struggles with the knowledge that closeness to her harms Misuzu. Haruko eventually tries to adopt Misuzu officially, and in a climactic moment, Misuzu rejects her biological father and calls Haruko Mama, affirming their bond. Another notable figure is her biological father, whose attempts to reclaim her add to her emotional struggle.

As the story progresses, Misuzu's condition deteriorates. She begins to have recurring dreams of a girl in the sky, connecting her to her past life. She becomes increasingly ill, regresses to a more childlike state, and eventually requires a wheelchair. Her health declines to the point where she is in constant pain. In the final episode, she asks to be taken to the beach. There, she musters her remaining strength to walk toward Yukito and Haruko, declaring that they are her goal. She reaches them only to collapse and die in Haruko's arms, ending the curse that had plagued the winged maiden's lineage.

Notable abilities stem from her supernatural connection to the legend. She does not possess combat skills or overt powers; instead, her curse is the central force that shapes her existence. Her uncontrollable crying when forming bonds is a direct manifestation of the curse, and her dreams offer glimpses into the past. As her condition worsens, she becomes physically frail, but her emotional resilience and wish to connect remain strong until the end.
