Description
Greco, whose full name is Greco Rohmann, is a supporting character from the first Vampire Hunter D novel and its 1985 film adaptation. He is depicted as the son of the mayor of Ransylva, the frontier village near Count Magnus Lee's territory. Physically, Greco is recognized by his curly blonde hair, which is neck-length, and his green eyes, often seen wearing frilled clothing, jewels, and a cravat that suggest a degree of affluence and vanity.
As the mayor's son, Greco holds a position of considerable influence within the village and is accustomed to getting what he wants. This has shaped his personality into that of an arrogant and persistent playboy who believes his social standing entitles him to the affections of Doris Lang, a local farmer's daughter. His primary motivation throughout the story is his possessive desire for Doris. When she rejects his advances and hires the vampire hunter D for protection, Greco’s wounded pride transforms his desire into a jealous and bitter rivalry against the mysterious hunter. He views D not as a savior but as a romantic obstacle to be eliminated.
Greco's role in the narrative is that of a human antagonist who, unlike the supernatural villains, represents the prejudice and opportunism found within Doris's own community. Incapable of understanding Doris's plight or respecting her choices, he publicly reveals that she has been bitten by a vampire, turning her fellow villagers against her. Greco's jealousy leads him to form an uneasy alliance with Rei-Ginsei, a ruthless human bandit leader in the employ of Count Lee. Both men share the common goal of getting rid of D, though for very different reasons. In his misguided quest to win Doris, Greco also comes into conflict with Larmica, the Count's vampire daughter, who sees the human woman as a stain on her noble family.
Greco's most significant action involves the Time-Bewitching Incense, a magical candle capable of weakening vampires and dhampirs. After overhearing a plot by Rei-Ginsei to use the candle against D, Greco steals the real one and replaces it with a fake, hoping to use it for his own purposes. He later successfully uses the stolen candle to neutralize Larmica, proving he is not entirely cowardly, though his actions are driven more by spite and self-interest than heroism. Ultimately, his schemes lead him to a grim fate. After being shot by Doris's young brother Dan and falling from a cliff, he is found and killed by Rei-Ginsei, who has no further use for him. In this way, Greco is a tragic figure of his own making, a human pawn whose arrogance blinds him to the far greater and more monstrous dangers surrounding him, leading to his swift and brutal demise.
