OVA
Description
In the anime New Cutey Honey, the protagonist is Honey Kisaragi, a powerful and kind-hearted gynoid, or female android. The series is set in the fictional Cosplay City one hundred years after the events of the original 1970s television series, with Honey reimagined as a young adult who is chronologically over a century old, possessing a taller and more athletic physique than her earlier incarnation.
Initially, Honey has lost all memories of her true nature as an android and her past as a heroine. At the beginning of the story, she lives a quiet life working as the secretary to Mayor Light, unaware of her own incredible powers. Her memories are inadvertently triggered and restored when her secret is revealed by Danbei Hayami, an aged, perverted cyborg from the original series. This revelation forces Honey to confront her destiny and once again take up the fight against evil.
Personality-wise, Honey is defined by her radiant optimism and deep-seated sense of justice. Even after regaining memories of a century-long battle, she remains hopeful about the future and is driven to protect the innocent citizens of Cosplay City. Her personality radiates cheerfulness, and she can sometimes appear ditzy or mischievous, but this belies a sharp intellect and a brave, caring heart. In battle, she often toys with and teases her enemies, maintaining a spirited demeanor even in the face of danger, yet she is emotionally vulnerable and deeply values the bonds she forms with her friends and allies.
Honey does not fight alone and forms a surrogate family with the eccentric Hayami household. She lives with Danbei Hayami, the 150-year-old cyborg whose perverted antics often involve trying to see her transform; his young grandson Chokkei, who has a crush on Honey and wishes to be a hero like the Mayor; and Chokkei's parents, Daiko and Akakabu, who are reformed criminals with a flair for the absurd. A significant new relationship in this series is with a girl named Natsuko, a young criminal who joins the group. Natsuko's presence strongly reminds Honey of a dear friend from her past who died at the hands of her nemesis, Sister Jill. This memory compels Honey to vow to protect the new Natsuko at all costs, adding a layer of parental tenderness and fierce loyalty to her character.
Throughout the story, Honey confronts a new generation of powerful villains. The first half of the series pits her against Dolmeck, a self-proclaimed Lord of Darkness who terrorizes Cosplay City, and his allies, including a reborn version of her ancient nemesis, Panther Zora. Her role evolves from a secretary who stumbles into heroics to the city's primary guardian, facing criminals empowered by a serum that turns them into monsters. Over the course of the narrative, she develops from a memory-loss victim into a determined warrior who must not only defeat her enemies but also confront the legacy of her own violent past, as the souls of the villains she has killed are used against her to resurrect Panther Zora to her full, terrifying power.
Honey's notable abilities are derived from the device within her android body, known as the Airborne Element Fixing Device or I-System. This power allows her to manipulate air molecules to create objects and change her appearance. By shouting Honey Flash, she can instantly transform into a variety of personas, each with unique skills. Her primary form is the red-haired, sword-wielding warrior Cutie Honey, who possesses superhuman strength, speed, and agility, is armed with a rapier called the Silver Fleurette, and can launch the Honey Boomerang from her bracelet. She also has anti-gravity boots that let her run on walls and ceilings and can fire a beam from her choker. Other common transformations include Hurricane Honey, a skilled motorcyclist; Misty Honey, a rock star who uses a microphone as a weapon; and Flash Honey, a cameraman who can blind foes with a flash. The transformation process itself is distinctive, as it shreds her civilian clothes, temporarily exposing her android form before her new battle attire materializes around her. Using the Airborne Element Fixing Device consumes a significant amount of energy, requiring Honey to consume large amounts of food to replenish her power.
