Description
Danbei Hayami is a major supporting character in New Cutey Honey, which is set approximately one hundred years after the original series. He is the patriarch of the Hayami family and the only member of the original main cast to appear alongside Honey in this sequel. At this point in the timeline, Danbei is remarkably over 150 years old and has survived into this futuristic era by being transformed into a cyborg.
In terms of background, Danbei was originally a skilled but elderly martial artist who aided Honey in her fight against the Panther Claw organization. By the time of New Cutey Honey, his physical form has been almost entirely replaced by a powerful mechanical body. This new cyborg design is heavily modeled after the classic super robot Mazinger Z, featuring a distinct appearance with dark and light colored panels and distinctive heat sink vents on his chest. His personality remains largely unchanged from his original incarnation. He is an easily excitable and boisterous old man who often acts like a child, yet he possesses a fierce protective instinct, especially when his family or allies are threatened. While he treats Honey like a member of his own family and offers her unwavering support, he also maintains a perverse and lecherous side, frequently attempting to peep on Honey while she is bathing or making inappropriate comments. Despite these antics, he shares a genuinely good relationship with her, and she affectionately refers to him as "Uncle."
His primary motivation is to continue the fight against evil forces, a mission he has carried for over a century. Alongside his descendants, who live with him in Cosplay City, he dedicates himself to assisting Honey in her battles against new threats such as Dolmeck and Black Maiden. His role in the story is that of a crucial ally and mentor, providing Honey with aid from the shadows. While he is no longer the purely organic martial arts master he once was, his new cyborg body grants him formidable abilities. He retains his master-level knowledge of ninjutsu and other fighting styles, but these skills are now augmented by superhuman strength and integrated weapon systems, most notably a powerful Rocket Punch. This combination of ancient martial arts and advanced robotics allows him to battle directly alongside Honey against powerful enemies, a task that would be impossible for his original, aged body.
