Description
Black Maiden is a central antagonist in the New Cutey Honey anime series. Her true identity is Panther Zora, the immortal witch and arch-enemy of Cutey Honey from the original series, who returns in a new form one hundred years after her supposed defeat. In this reincarnated state, she appears as a young, teenage girl with red hair, who is usually depicted nude while encased within the protective shell of a winged humanoid mech suit. Her voice is cold and sinister, reflecting her ancient and malevolent nature.
As a character, Black Maiden is defined by a profound and utter selfishness. She is sadistic, power-hungry, and views everyone around her merely as tools to be used for her own benefit. Her primary motivation is the restoration of her full, god-like power. To achieve this, she enters into a partnership with Dolmeck, the self-proclaimed Lord of Darkness who rules over Cosplay City. Black Maiden promises Dolmeck power in exchange for his help in reviving her to her full potential. She allows him to believe he is in charge, using his resources and ambition to serve her own secret agenda.
In the story's first half, Black Maiden acts as a powerful enforcer and co-conspirator to Dolmeck. She helps him unleash a wave of crime and corruption across Cosplay City, providing him with a serum that transforms criminals into rampaging monsters for Cutey Honey to fight. Her role is to observe and manipulate events from behind the scenes, all while waiting for the moment of her resurrection. Her key relationship is with Dolmeck, whom she ultimately betrays without a second thought once he has served his purpose, escaping his crashing spaceship and leaving him to die in the ensuing explosion. She also has a long-standing, bitter relationship with Cutey Honey, who she sees as the primary obstacle to her domination and the key to obtaining her power source, the Airborne Element Fixing Device.
Black Maiden undergoes a significant transformation during the series. When Cutey Honey damages her mech suit and severely injures her, Dolmeck betrays her secret plan. He releases the collected evil souls of all the criminals Honey has slain, channeling them into Black Maiden's body. This process causes her to rapidly age from her teenage form into a fully mature, adult woman, restoring her to the height of her power as the complete Panther Zora. Upon her full revival, she immediately discards Dolmeck and sets out to re-establish her criminal empire, Panther Claw. In the second half of the series, she empowers a new generation of female criminals, granting them monstrous transformations and causing widespread death and chaos in an attempt to finally destroy Honey.
Black Maiden possesses a range of notable abilities. Her primary power is potent telekinesis, which she can use to move objects and people with her mind. She is also capable of influencing the evil desires within others, using this darkness to forcibly transform people into monstrous beings. After her resurrection, she can grant special powers directly to her followers, turning them into powerful warriors. She is also shown to be a skilled combatant, piloting her mech suit effectively in direct confrontation against Cutey Honey. Despite her young appearance as Black Maiden, she retains the immense strength and psionic powers of the ancient witch Panther Zora, making her a formidable and relentless foe.
