Description
A. J. Sebastian is a character from the 1988 anime adaptation of Appleseed, serving as the primary antagonist. He is depicted as a foreign cyborg, a human who has been enhanced with mechanical parts, granting him augmented physical capabilities. Sebastian is a terrorist whose core mission is to steal a massive, flying armored tank known as the Multi-ped Cannon and deliver it to an outside strike force. His ultimate goal is to destabilize the city of Olympus, a utopian experiment where bioroids—genetically engineered beings—handle most administrative duties. He claims to want to eliminate the bioroids and return power and control to natural-born humans.

Sebastian's personality is defined by his ruthless determination and his role as an agent of chaos. He is a disenfranchised individual who views the carefully managed society of Olympus not as a paradise, but as an artificial cage that strips humanity of its independence. To achieve his objective, he forms a secret alliance with Calon Mautholos, a disillusioned city police officer who lost faith in the system after his wife's suicide. Together, they plot to disable Gaia, the supercomputer that controls all of Olympus's infrastructure, including the security overrides for the Multi-ped Cannon. Their plan involves staging a diversionary attack on a bioroid facility to cover the kidnapping of a specific bioroid named Hitomi, whose unique DNA is the genetic key required to shut down Gaia.

In his role within the story, Sebastian is the primary threat that the protagonists, ESWAT agents Deunan Knute and Briareos Hecatonchires, are tasked with stopping. His actions drive the second half of the plot, as he successfully converts into his full-military configuration and seizes the Multi-ped Cannon. While his ally Calon makes a desperate, fatal run to use Hitomi at the last remaining activation kiosk, Sebastian uses the stolen tank to unleash havoc on the city, creating widespread destruction to cover their escape. Sebastian's development is minimal, as he functions as a static, archetypal villain whose beliefs and objectives remain unchanged from his introduction to his demise. He does not undergo a significant transformation or redemption arc, serving instead as the physical embodiment of the violent opposition to Olympus's artificial order.

Sebastian's most notable abilities are directly tied to his cyborg nature. He possesses enhanced strength and has interchangeable limbs, allowing him to adapt to different combat situations. His most formidable ability is his capacity to convert into a full-military configuration, essentially transforming his body into a powerful combat unit capable of piloting and operating heavy weapons systems like the Multi-ped Cannon. This transformation makes him a formidable one-man army, requiring the full force of the city's defenses and the protagonists' skills to stop him. He ultimately meets his end when the Gaia computer is restarted, which instantly disables his stolen tank, leading to his death.
