Description
Gan, often called Gan-chan, is a resident of the temple and serves as the primary non-divine character in the series. His background is that of a simple temple rat, living in the walls and storerooms of the sanctuary that the goddesses have made their home. This origin positions him as the sole ordinary creature caught up in the extraordinary, often chaotic, daily lives of the divine sisters. He does not possess magical lineage or divine purpose, making him the relatable, grounded presence in a world of supernatural antics.

In terms of personality, Gan is defined by a fundamental niceness and a friendly disposition that makes him easy to like and even easier to influence. He is highly emotional, reacting with great excitement to opportunities, particularly those involving food, and displays a notable tendency toward gluttony, with his love for eating being one of his most consistent traits. Complementing this is a trusting and somewhat naive nature; he rarely suspects ill intent from those around him, which paradoxically makes him both a good friend and an easy target. This trusting nature is a key part of his charm, as he approaches each new suggestion or invention from the goddesses with an open mind, unaware of the chaos that usually follows.

Gan's primary motivation is largely centered on self-preservation and simple pleasures. He seeks quiet days, good food, and peaceful company. His actions are rarely driven by grand ambition but rather by a desire to avoid trouble, enjoy a meal, or spend time with Belldandy, who represents a haven of calm in his otherwise turbulent life. Because he is often unwillingly dragged into adventures by Urd and Skuld, his role in the story is that of the straight man and the unfortunate victim. He is the catalyst for the comedy in many episodes, as his reactions to the goddesses' experiments and schemes highlight the absurdity of the situation. He serves as the lens through which the audience experiences the chaos, reacting with understandable alarm and weariness to events the goddesses find routine.

Key relationships form the core of Gan's existence. His dynamic with Skuld and Urd is one of reluctant participation and frequent suffering. Due to his nice and trusting nature, he is frequently led off on wild adventures by the two goddesses, who use him as a test subject for their inventions or a companion on their quests. The end result is almost always the same, with Gan being on the receiving end of physical abuse, explosions, or other misfortunes. In stark contrast, his relationship with Belldandy is one of admiration and preference. He has a clear crush on her and prefers her company because she is much quieter, calmer, and far from being violent toward him compared to her sisters. With Belldandy, Gan finds the peace and safety that is otherwise absent from his life.

The series provides little room for traditional character development for Gan. Due to the sitcom-like and episodic nature of the show, he rarely retains lessons or changes his behavior across episodes. His memory of past disasters with Urd and Skuld seems to reset frequently, allowing him to be tricked by the same kinds of schemes time and again. This lack of progression is part of the comedy, establishing him as a perpetual butt monkey whose suffering is a recurring punchline. He is defined by his consistency and his inability to escape his role as the long-suffering resident of the temple, with the series often relying on negative continuity where past episodes do not necessarily affect the next.

Regarding notable abilities, Gan does not possess any magical powers or combat skills. His primary ability is his resilience; he is capable of surviving an enormous amount of physical abuse, from explosions to falls to being used as a guinea pig for high-tech gadgets. Another of his key traits is his talent for getting into and out of tight spaces, a skill natural to a rat. He is also a talking animal, capable of full speech and communication with the goddesses, which is treated as normal within the world of the show. Beyond these, his abilities are mundane, often involving his cleverness in hiding food or his speed in fleeing from danger, though these efforts are rarely successful. He also appears to be largely unaware of the fourth wall at times, sometimes showcasing a meta-awareness of his role in the series.
