Description
In the 1998 anime film Galaxy Express 999: Eternal Fantasy, the character known as Kanon is a synthetic humanoid entity who serves as the new interface for the Galaxy Express 999 train itself. She takes the form of a young woman with very long white hair that reaches past her hips and purple eyes. Her design reflects the distinctive artistic style of Leiji Matsumoto, combining an elegant and appealing presence with a functional role as the embodiment of the locomotive.
Kanon is a cordial and sociable personality who interacts directly with the passengers, explaining various features and functions of the train. Upon meeting Tetsuro Hoshino, she helps him understand the capabilities of the 999, acting as a guide and companion during their journey. As a being intrinsically linked to the train itself, her awareness extends to the space around it; she is able to detect approaching energy fields and potential threats, functioning almost as the ship's sensory system.
Her primary role in the story is as a new crew member and ally to Tetsuro and Maetel as they confront a new darkness threatening the universe. She joins the main characters on the Galaxy Express 999 after it rescues Tetsuro from an unjust execution on Earth. Throughout the film, she remains aboard the train, assisting in its operation and providing support as the group faces the agent Helmazaria and navigates through dangerous regions of space. Her presence represents a new era for the Galaxy Express 999, which has been rebuilt or upgraded following the events of the previous story. While her development within the film is limited due to its short runtime, her calm and informative demeanor makes her a reliable part of the team. Her notable abilities stem directly from her nature as the train's synthetic soul, allowing her to monitor the 999's surroundings and communicate its status to the human passengers.
