Description
Makoto Yotsuba is the younger brother of Kokoro Yotsuba and the son of Koichi Yotsuba and Misato Yotsuba within the Yotsuba household. He is a boy of elementary school age who is characterized by his high energy and restless nature. Frequently described as rowdy, his exuberance can sometimes be irritating to his older sister, though it also reflects a genuine curiosity about the world around him. Makoto has a strong interest in nature, particularly insects, which he collects and studies with enthusiasm. This fascination often leads him to suggest new activities or explorations for himself and his sister, and his practical knowledge of the natural world occasionally proves useful when the Cocotamas encounter problems.

In the story, Makoto serves as a supporting human character who is aware of the Cocotamas’ existence and becomes involved in their care and the adventures that arise from them. He is not a primary contractor like Kokoro, but he participates in the daily life of the household, interacting with the tiny gods who live in the Cocotama House. His motivations are driven by a desire to learn, to play, and to support his sister, even though his impulsive actions sometimes create minor complications—such as accidentally damaging a book, which temporarily trapped the Cocotama Oshaki. Over the course of the series, Makoto’s role deepens as he takes on more responsibility for looking after the Cocotamas, showing a maturing sense of duty that balances his earlier mischievous tendencies.

Makoto’s key relationships are centered on his family. With Kokoro, he shares a typical sibling dynamic of teasing and occasional annoyance, but he also demonstrates protectiveness and eagerness to join her in the secret world of the Cocotamas. He interacts warmly with the Cocotamas, treating them as friends and playmates. His parents, though less prominently featured, provide a stable home environment that allows Makoto’s curiosity to flourish. He does not possess any magical or supernatural abilities; his notable traits are his energetic personality, his observational skills regarding nature, and his growing willingness to help maintain the harmony of the Cocotama household. Through these qualities, Makoto contributes to the everyday warmth and light-hearted chaos that defines the Yotsuba family’s life with the tiny apprentice gods.
