Description
Ilse Langnar is a member of the Scout Regiment who appears in the special side story known as Ilse's Notebook. She is a participant in the 34th expedition beyond the Walls, where she is assigned to the left wing of the second brigade. Physically, Ilse has short black hair parted to the right, lightly tanned or dark skin, and gold-colored eyes with a small patch of freckles below each one. It has been noted that her appearance bears a resemblance to another character, Ymir. She stands 160 centimeters tall and wears the standard uniform of the Scout Regiment, complete with a cape and a gray shirt underneath.

In terms of personality, Ilse is depicted as a devoted and intelligent soldier who takes her duties seriously. She is emotional but also displays considerable bravery, trying to remain composed even in desperate situations. She is proud of her role as a member of the Scout Regiment, seeing herself as one of humanity's wings of freedom, and is resolved to contribute whatever she can to the cause. Her final thoughts reveal a deep care for her family, as she regrets being unable to give anything back to her parents. Official data rates her highest attribute as her inquisitiveness, or "exploratory heart," with a score of 10.

Ilse's role in the story takes place entirely during this ill-fated expedition. After her entire flank is massacred and she is the sole survivor, she loses her horse and her vertical maneuvering equipment is broken. She flees on foot into a nearby forest, knowing her chances of survival are nearly zero. As she searches for a route back to the Walls, she begins documenting her experiences in a notebook, hoping that her notes will at least prove useful to humanity in the future. This simple act of recording information becomes her primary motivation and her lasting legacy.

Her most significant encounter is with a Titan that does not behave normally. When the Titan corners her against a tree, it hesitates and then begins to speak, bowing and greeting her with the phrases subject of Ymir and Lady Ymir, well met. Instead of fleeing, Ilse is driven by her duty and curiosity. She begins to question the Titan about its origins and the nature of its kind, meticulously recording its behavior and non-verbal reactions in her notebook. She attempts to communicate with it, believing this to be an unprecedented opportunity for humanity to gain information about their enemy. However, the confrontation takes an emotional toll. Frustrated by the Titan’s lack of coherent answers, she loses her composure, screaming at it about the horror of Titans eating humans and demanding that such useless lumps of flesh disappear from the world. Her outburst triggers a violent reaction in the Titan, which begins tearing at its own face in frustration. Horrified, she attempts to flee but is caught. As the Titan bites off her head, her final act is to continue writing in her notebook, documenting her own death.

Key relationships for Ilse are largely defined by her legacy rather than direct interactions. Her primary relationship is with the unnamed Titan she encounters, a bizarre connection that ultimately leads to her death. The notebook she leaves behind becomes her most crucial link to the wider world. One year after her death, the notebook and her remains are discovered in the forest by Levi and Hange Zoë. The information within becomes a vital piece of evidence for Hange's research into Titan nature. Ilse's recorded encounter is one of the first documented instances of what appears to be communication with a Titan, and it directly contributes to the decision to restart the long-suspended project to capture Titans for study. In this way, Ilse's development is defined by her courageous, though ultimately fatal, decision to prioritize intelligence gathering over her own survival. Her character arc does not show growth from one state to another, but rather a consistent expression of her established dedication, pushed to its absolute limit until the moment of her death. She is later seen among the fallen comrades in Commander Erwin Smith's mind, her silent question being whether their deaths had meaning.

Her notable abilities, as listed in official data, include a score of 7 in action and coordination, and a 6 in both hand-to-hand combat and strategic thinking. Her most remarkable ability, however, is not physical combat prowess. Given that she is a regular soldier who survives the initial massacre, her defining skill is her acute observational sense and her overwhelming drive to document and understand, even when facing certain death. Her capacity to continue writing a detailed scientific account while being eaten demonstrates a form of bravery unique to her character. In the original manga, her body is left on the ground, but the anime adaptation provides a final image of her remains being stored inside a hollow of a tree by the Titan that killed her.
