TV-Series
Description
Kengo Akechi is a police superintendent serving in the First Investigative Division of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department. He is an elite officer, a career-track graduate of the University of Tokyo’s law faculty, and is known for his exceptionally sharp intellect. Throughout the series, Akechi functions as a professional rival to the amateur detective Hajime Kindaichi, and the two share a complex dynamic built on mutual respect despite their frequent disagreements.

Akechi’s background is one of exceptional achievement. As a student at the prestigious Shuo High School, he was nicknamed Shuo's Holmes for his ability to solve mysteries, and he earned the moniker the God of Entrance Exams due to his success as a part-time cram school instructor, where he helped many students enter top universities. He later joined the Los Angeles Police Department, an experience he often references, sometimes to the irritation of those around him. During his time in Los Angeles, he reached the finals of the World Chess Championship and had a romantic relationship with a colleague named Patricia.

Akechi’s personality is defined by his intellectual arrogance and overachieving nature. He initially comes across as prideful and snobbish, seemingly considering himself superior to others, including Kindaichi. This attitude is tempered after his first encounter with Kindaichi during the Snow Yaksha Legend Murder Case, where Kindaichi points out a critical flaw in his reasoning that led the investigation to a dead end. Following this, his haughtiness becomes less hostile and more playful, evolving into a less abrasive but still competitive rivalry. Despite his polished and sometimes cold demeanor, Akechi possesses a fierce sense of justice, stating that he would not back down from uncovering the truth even if opposed by the highest authority. He is consistently polite, even speaking with honorifics to his subordinate, Inspector Isamu Kenmochi, and to the high school student Kindaichi.

His role in the story is that of a formidable ally and occasional antagonist to Kindaichi. While they compete to solve cases first, Akechi often provides crucial assistance, whether deliberately or inadvertently, helping Kindaichi out of difficult situations. He is also a protagonist in his own right, serving as the central character in spin-off series such as The Akechi Case Files and Inspector Akechi Case Files, which explore his early career and personal history.

Beyond his rivalry with Hajime Kindaichi, Akechi has key relationships with other characters. He is the direct superior of Inspector Isamu Kenmochi, who often complains about Akechi’s eccentric personality behind his back, though he respects his abilities. Akechi also has a strange and unresolved connection with the criminal mastermind Yoichi Takato, having had near-misses with him during his high school years and later in Los Angeles. Over the course of the series, Akechi shows significant development. He transitions from a purely arrogant elite who looks down on others to a more well-rounded individual whose skills are complemented by a willingness to subtly rely on his colleagues; for instance, he has been known to leave deliberate clues for others to follow, a rare admission of dependence for such a prideful character. The spin-off Inspector Akechi Case Files further explores how professional setbacks contributed to his more complex, and sometimes "twisted," personality.

Akechi’s notable abilities are vast and place him in the highest tier of geniuses within the series. In addition to his deductive reasoning, which rivals that of Kindaichi, he is multilingual, speaking Japanese, English, French, German, Mandarin, and Cantonese. He is an accomplished fencer, violinist, and chess player, having competed at a world championship level. His skills also extend to piloting large passenger aircraft, which he learned using a simulator during his time in Los Angeles, as well as computer programming and hacking. Physically, he is tall, with silver hair and glasses, and is generally considered attractive. He typically wears a light yellow coat and matching pants, and he has a noted fondness for apple pie.
