Description
Suzu Naito, a 17-year-old high school student from rural Kochi Prefecture, Japan, experienced a profound trauma at age six: witnessing her mother sacrifice her life to save a child during a flood. This event shattered their close bond, leading Suzu to resent her mother's choice and causing severe psychological effects. She became unable to sing without nausea and grew emotionally distant from her father.

Physically, Suzu has pale skin, russet brown eyes, and dark brown bobbed hair with bangs and freckled cheeks. She wears a school uniform of a white shirt, red tie, blue plaid skirt, white quarter socks, and black loafers, or casual attire like white t-shirts, blue jeans, and grey sneakers with yellow laces.

Her life transforms when her tech-savvy friend Hiroka Betsuyaku introduces her to "U," a vast virtual reality universe. U's biometric scan creates her avatar "Bell," later nicknamed "Belle" by fans. Belle possesses rose-pink knee-length hair, blue eyes, fair skin, distinctive reddish-pink freckles, and elegant features—a stark contrast to Suzu's real-world appearance.

Within U, Belle discovers she can sing freely without nausea. Her debut performance of "Gales of Song," remixed by Hiroka into "Swarms of Song," propels her to overnight global stardom as U's new diva. Despite fame, Belle remains humble, directing revenue to charity. Her online confidence begins influencing her real-world interactions, though she strictly separates her identities, with Hiroka acting as her manager and sole confidante.

Belle's trajectory shifts upon encountering "The Dragon," a notorious figure pursued in U. Intrigued by his perceived pain, she investigates. This parallels her real-life navigation of unexpressed feelings for childhood friend Shinobu Hisatake (who vowed to protect her after her mother's death) and facilitating a relationship between classmates Ruka Watanabe and Shinjiro "Kamishin" Chikami.

Her pursuit reveals The Dragon as Kei, a 14-year-old abuse victim protecting his younger brother Tomo from their violent father. When Kei distrusts her online offer of help, Suzu makes a pivotal choice: during a global U broadcast, she discards her Belle avatar to sing as her real self, publicly revealing her identity to gain his trust. This act, encouraged by Shinobu and her support network, symbolizes her growing self-acceptance.

After Kei's father severs their internet connection during a critical exchange, Suzu uses contextual clues to locate the brothers in Kawasaki. Disregarding personal safety, she physically intervenes during a violent confrontation, shielding Kei and Tomo. Though sustaining minor injuries, her intervention disrupts the abuse cycle, causing the father to retreat. This act of courage parallels her mother's self-sacrifice, allowing Suzu to finally understand and reconcile with her mother's choice.

Following these events, Suzu reconciles with her father, who welcomes her home. Shinobu acknowledges her newfound strength, releasing himself from his protective role to pursue an equal relationship. Having processed her trauma and embraced both her real and virtual identities, Suzu regains her passion for singing, now able to perform freely in both worlds.
