Description
Keiichi Katakura, often called Kei-chan by his close friends, is one of the four core male protagonists in the story. He is a high school student attending Seiryou Municipal High School alongside his three best friends. He stands at 175 centimeters tall and has a birthday on May 10th, making his zodiac sign a Taurus, and his blood type is O. He has a slightly messy head of short, dark brown hair and brown eyes, a look that contributes to his overall bright and approachable appearance. He is the younger brother of Yuuji Katakura, who serves as both a mathematics teacher and the homeroom instructor for his friend group.
On the surface, Keiichi presents himself as a laid-back, cheerful, and winsome young man who is almost always seen smiling. This affable and easygoing nature makes him very popular and easily approachable to those around him. However, this gentle exterior conceals a much more complex and surprising interior personality. Keiichi has a well-developed and openly acknowledged sadistic streak. He derives enjoyment from teasing his friends and others, and his most notorious habit is carrying a whip with him, which he sometimes uses to playfully threaten or "discipline" those around him, particularly his friends. This combination of a sunny smile and a love for causing playful trouble makes him a distinctive and unpredictable member of the group.
Keiichi is a natural athlete and is described as being an all-around sportsman, though he has a particular fondness for basketball. He often attends the practices of the school's basketball club. His athletic ability is one of the many facets of his personality that he takes in stride, rarely showing any arrogance about his talents. He appears to be a student who navigates his school life with a sense of relaxed confidence, not taking things too seriously but always ready for some form of entertainment, often at the expense of his closest companions.
Within the central friend group, Keiichi acts as a key source of both amusement and unpredictable chaos. He is one of four distinct personalities: alongside the romantic dreamer Natsuki Hashiba, the narcissistic playboy Tomoya Matsunaga, and the socially awkward otaku Tsuyoshi Naoe. Keiichi fits in as the sly wit of the quartet, often using his sharp tongue and hidden sadistic nature to poke fun at his friends' romantic troubles and personal quirks. He shares a particularly close dynamic with all three, and his relationship with his older brother, who is also their teacher, adds an interesting layer to his school life, blurring the lines between his home and academic worlds.
As the story progresses, Keiichi experiences a notable romantic development. After a brief and disillusioning crush on the new school nurse, his attention eventually turns to Nozomi Matsunaga, who is Tomoya's younger sister. He meets Nozomi during a trip to the beach, where he helps her after she gets injured. This encounter sparks her interest in him, and she later confesses her feelings to him at an amusement park. Seeing what he believes is potential in her, Keiichi begins to pursue a relationship with Nozomi. This marks a significant step for his character, showing that beneath his sadistic exterior, he is capable of genuine romantic interest. Their relationship continues to develop, eventually leading to their first date after the group graduates from high school.
