Description
Kayoko Himeji, often called Kayo-chan by her friends, is a student of the Yokosuka Girls' Marine High School and serves as a crew member aboard the destroyer Harekaze. Born on August 2nd in the Nerima ward of Tokyo, she stands 148 centimeters tall with A-type blood, and her zodiac sign is Leo. Her nickname, Kayo-chan, is a familiar and affectionate way her peers address her.
Kayoko is best known for her exceptionally calm, relaxed, and easygoing personality. She rarely appears stressed or flustered, maintaining a quiet and reserved demeanor that helps her avoid drawing unnecessary attention. Despite this laid-back nature, she can become very passionate when engaged with her personal interests, particularly bowling and food. She is described as a thoughtful individual who adheres to the personal motto of always thinking about what comes next, reflecting a forward-thinking approach to her duties and life.
Her motivations for attending marine school are deeply rooted in family influence. The most significant inspiration was her mother, who serves as a crew member on an international ocean liner. Seeing her mother in her maritime uniform sparked Kayoko's own ambition to follow a naval career path. Her family background also provides her with a unique set of hobbies and knowledge. Her father is a professional bowler, which led to Kayoko becoming an expert bowler herself. Additionally, her grandfather is a passionate sumo wrestling fan, from whom she has learned a great deal about the sport.
On board the Harekaze, Kayoko holds a specific and important technical role. She is the torpedo crew member responsible for operating and firing the second torpedo tube. She is noted for her skill and sense of responsibility when handling heavy machinery and weapon systems. Beyond her torpedo duties, she has a surprising ability: she holds an intermediate license to operate cranes and tower cranes. Her academic strengths lie in mathematics, her favorite subject, while her weak point is spoken English. Interestingly, due to frequent travels abroad accompanying her parents, she has a good understanding of spoken English even though she struggles to speak it herself. Her favorite food is eggplant, especially a pickled variety, and she strongly dislikes eating mountain vegetables.
The most significant relationship in Kayoko's life is with her crewmate and friend, Ritsuko Matsunaga. The two share a deep bond forged through their common passion for bowling, where they are friendly rivals who have competed against each other in tournaments. They are often seen together on the ship, and their friendship is a cornerstone of their daily lives. In the story, both participate in critical missions, such as the dangerous task of clearing naval mines, where they work as a team. Later material shows her interest in further skill development, as she participates in training to obtain a license for operating smaller watercraft alongside fellow student Mei Irizaki, receiving instruction from Akeno Misaki and Ritsuko Matsunaga.
