Description
Hiromi Kuroki, often called by her nickname Kuro-chan, is a supporting character from the anime High School Fleet. She serves as the assistant engineer aboard the destroyer Harekaze, a role that places her in the ship's engineering department and makes her responsible for the engines and onboard machinery.

Born on November 1st in Chōshi, Chiba Prefecture, Hiromi stands at 169 centimeters tall, making her the tallest student in her class aboard the Harekaze. She has brown hair and brown eyes. Her background is rooted in a childhood fascination with mechanical things; exposure to diesel locomotives sparked her interest in engineering, while early visits to a soy sauce factory led to a personal hobby of making soy sauce at home. Her academic strengths lie in chemistry, a subject that complements her technical duties.

Hiromi is characterized by a calm and reserved demeanor, though she is not afraid to express her opinions directly and can be quite blunt when she feels strongly about something. Beneath this sometimes cool exterior, she is deeply loyal and kind to those she trusts. Her personality is marked by a tendency to become completely absorbed in her interests, whether working on machinery, practicing sumo, or pursuing her unique hobby of stretching. Her personal motto is to give her love freely.

A central aspect of Hiromi's character is her deep admiration for Mashiro Munetani, which she developed after seeing Mashiro perform at a Blue Mermaids event during her third year of middle school. This admiration was so powerful that Hiromi decided to enroll at the Yokosuka Girls' Marine School specifically to attend the same school as Mashiro. This devotion, however, led to an initial conflict with the ship's captain, Akeno Misaki. Hiromi felt that Mashiro, who was the vice-captain, was more suited to be captain and openly resented Akeno, whom she saw as having taken Mashiro's rightful position. This resentment is one of the few sources of open hostility on the Harekaze, with Hiromi even glaring at Akeno while greeting Mashiro, who remains her object of respect.

In contrast to her relationship with Akeno, Hiromi shares a deep and long-standing bond with Maron Yanagiwara, her childhood friend from Chiba. The two complement each other well; despite Maron having a more bossy personality, Hiromi quietly takes care of her and understands her friend's hidden loneliness. They are good companions who balance one another.

Hiromi's role in the story begins with her as a quiet source of dissent, causing some tension within the crew. Her major turning point occurs during the Equator Festival, where a sumo wrestling match becomes a key moment of reconciliation. Hiromi is a highly skilled sumo wrestler, having won a local women's tournament in Chōshi. During the festival, she uses advanced techniques of considerable difficulty, such as osate, kakezori, nimaigeri, and sotomuso. Her match against Captain Akeno, which was influenced by Maron's strategy, leads to a significant softening of her attitude. She begins to move past her resentment and accept Akeno's leadership, realizing that being true companions means complementing each other's weaknesses rather than competing for who is best suited to lead.

Following this development, Hiromi becomes a more supportive and integral member of the crew. During the critical mission to pursue the Musashi, she works alongside Maron to provide crucial emotional support to both Akeno and Mashiro, helping to encourage them as they face major challenges. Her earlier hostility toward the captain is largely resolved, and she learns to trust Akeno, even as her admiration for Mashiro remains a key part of her character.

Beyond her sumo skills, Hiromi possesses notable technical abilities that make her valuable in her position as assistant engineer. She has extensive knowledge of fuels, lubricants, and explosives, and holds several certifications including a secondary maritime machinery technician license, a first-class boiler technician license, a license for the safe handling of fireworks, and a hazardous materials handler license for classes two through four. Her passion for engineering and mechanics remains a constant, and she applies her skills diligently to keep the Harekaze running, even when it means pushing the engines to maximum output under pressure from the command crew. She is popular among her peers, ranking second in crew popularity, and is often seen as a motivating presence during crises. Her favorite foods include cinnamon toast and cinnamon rolls, while she dislikes green peppers.
