Description
Kii-chan, whose full name is Kiko Satozaki, is introduced as the younger cousin of the protagonist Tomoko Kuroki and her brother Tomoki. She is a middle school student who is a few years younger than Tomoko. In terms of appearance, Kii-chan is a girl of average height for her age, with a slender build and fair skin. She has straight, shoulder-length black hair that is often partially covered by bangs, and she typically wears a small yellow clip on the left side of her hair. Her large eyes are a blue-green color. She is often seen wearing a cream-colored dress with white trim on the collar and sleeves.

Kii-chan's personality is initially presented as very sweet and pleasant, as she adores her older cousin and looks up to her greatly. She addresses Tomoko with the affectionate term onee-chan, meaning big sister. However, this admiration is built on a fragile foundation. For years, Tomoko had been feeding Kii-chan exaggerated stories and lies about her social life, including tales of having a boyfriend who wanted to spend all his time with her. When Kii-chan was younger and more innocent, she believed these stories completely and respected Tomoko for them. The central motivation behind Kii-chan's actions in the story is her changing perception of Tomoko. Upon discovering that her cousin has been lying to her, particularly when she sees that Tomoko does not have a boyfriend, Kii-chan begins to lose respect for her. She becomes increasingly disappointed, and her sweet demeanor shifts. Tomoko eventually comes to suspect that Kii-chan now looks at her with pity, more like a person would look at a lost or abandoned puppy than a respected older sister, and that she may even treat her like a pet dog. Despite this change, Kii-chan's motivation is not malicious. In later chapters, she seems to take it upon herself to help the socially inept Tomoko, such as when she tries to help her improve her appearance and find a boyfriend during a summer visit, though she does so without Tomoko's full knowledge.

Kii-chan's role in the story is to serve as a mirror reflecting Tomoko's deep-seated insecurities and the gap between the popular, successful high school girl she pretends to be and the reality of her lonely life. When Kii-chan first comes to visit, Tomoko becomes intensely paranoid that her younger, now more mature cousin will see through all her lies. This leads to a series of desperate and humiliating attempts by Tomoko to fabricate evidence of a glamorous life, making Kii-chan a catalyst for some of Tomoko's most pathetic moments. A key event that shatters Kii-chan's illusions is when she meets a kind boy named Kosaka at the library. Tomoko had identified him as her secret boyfriend, but Kii-chan later witnesses him with his real girlfriend and then sees Tomoko on her knees apologizing to him. The final blow comes when Tomoko takes her to a card game tournament to show off, only for Kii-chan to see her resort to cheating against much younger children.

In terms of key relationships, her most significant one is, of course, with her cousin Tomoko. This relationship evolves from one of admiration to disappointment, to pity, and eventually to a more complex dynamic where Kii-chan seems to take on a somewhat superior, guiding role, believing she needs to teach her older cousin how to be more successful. In a twist that surprises Tomoko, Kii-chan once confessed that her ideal type was her onee-chan, Tomoko, because she makes her heart skip a beat in a way her brother does not, leading Tomoko to worry that her younger cousin has a crush on her. Her relationship with her other cousin, Tomoki, is notably distant, as they are rarely seen interacting. She also has a mother who appears only off-screen, and it is implied that the family has a positive, if not deeply explored, relationship with Kii-chan's aunt and uncle, Tomoko's parents.

Kii-chan also shows notable development over the course of the series. When she is first introduced, she is a 12 or 13-year-old first-year middle school student. As the story progresses, she matures, and by later chapters, she is in her final year of middle school while Tomoko is finishing high school. Her development is mirrored in her changing attitude toward Tomoko. In one of her later appearances, she visits Tomoko and is surprised to find that her cousin seems to have matured as well. Tomoko no longer makes up wild stories to impress her, has actual friends, and has plans for her future. Kii-chan even goes on a tour of Tomoko's school, meeting her friends, and declares her intention to attend the same college as Tomoko, much to her cousin's alarm. She continues to appear in the story, with manga chapters as recent as 2024 showing her making secret visits, indicating her enduring presence in Tomoko's life. One of her more unusual abilities, or at least a recurring theme in late chapters, is a surreal power to appear in Tomoko's dreams during the New Year. In these dreams, she performs bizarre rituals involving eggplants, which she claims will bring Tomoko good fortune, though it is played for surreal and comedic effect.
