Description
Horn Skuld is a vampire noble and the seventeenth progenitor in the anime Seraph of the End: Battle in Nagoya. She is a member of the faction led by the seventh progenitor, Ferid Bathory, and serves directly under the thirteenth progenitor, Crowley Eusford, acting as one of his closest aides. She is almost always seen in the company of her fellow servant, Chess Belle, with the two often working as a pair to carry out their master's orders.
Horn possesses a calm, composed, and serious personality, which stands in stark contrast to the more impulsive and unruly nature of Chess. She firmly believes that a vampire noble should carry themselves with a certain level of grace and self-control, and she frequently chides Chess for her savage behavior, such as when Chess drains a human hostage of blood against orders. Horn encourages her companion to act with more discipline, often taking on an older-sister-like role in their dynamic. Despite her typically composed exterior, she can display a fierce and determined side when a situation calls for it, showing a readiness to intervene directly in combat. She is not above displaying emotion, as seen when she blushes after being permitted to drink a small amount of Crowley's blood, an offer she accepts with gratitude and a sense of humility, stating she is not worthy of such an honor.
Her primary motivation is to serve Crowley Eusford loyally and effectively. She takes her duties seriously, whether in deliberation or on the battlefield. During the human invasion of Nagoya, she correctly interprets the attack as an act of war and advocates for a strong counterstrike. She is also keenly intelligent and perceptive, being one of the first among her group to seriously consider the possibility that a traitor among the vampire nobles might be providing the Japanese Imperial Demon Army with crucial information, including the secret of cursed gear that can injure vampires. She holds a shared dislike with Chess for Lord Ferid, finding his secretive and perpetually mysterious demeanor to be sneaky and annoying.
In the story, Horn is a significant antagonist during the Battle in Nagoya arc. Alongside Crowley and Chess, she is one of the primary targets of a large-scale human extermination mission. The trio easily defeats the initial assault, taking many soldiers hostage. Her role becomes more prominent during the ensuing conflict at Nagoya City Hall, where she serves as a formidable obstacle for Shinoa Squad and the remnants of Guren Squad. Her primary function in combat is to provide support for Crowley and to coordinate attacks with Chess. She notably prevents Shinya Hīragi from interfering in Crowley's fight against Guren Ichinose, using her whip to disarm and disable him. She also assists Chess in fighting Yūichirō Hyakuya, using her whip to tangle his leg and lift him into the air, leaving him vulnerable to a strike from her partner. At one point, she directly requests permission from Crowley to kill Yūichirō, showing her ruthlessness, though this request is denied.
Her key relationships are central to her character. Her relationship with Crowley Eusford is one of absolute loyalty and devotion. She obeys his orders without question, attends to his needs, and fights to protect his interests. Crowley, in turn, seems to trust her, even offering her his own blood. Her relationship with Chess Belle is that of a foil and a supervisor. While they work seamlessly together in battle, Horn is constantly trying to temper Chess's wild impulses and remind her of the proper conduct expected of a noble. Outside of this trio, she has few direct interactions, though she serves under Ferid Bathory by extension and respects the authority of the Queen of Japan, Krul Tepes.
Regarding her development, Horn demonstrates a growing awareness of the changing power dynamics between humans and vampires. Initially dismissive of the human threat, she comes to understand that their newfound power with cursed gear is a serious danger, even speculating on the existence of a high-ranking vampire traitor. She also shows a degree of strategic thinking, such as when she proposes they gather as much intelligence as possible from the human commanders instead of simply killing them.
Horn Skuld possesses the standard physical abilities of a vampire noble, including superhuman strength, speed, and regenerative capabilities. As a seventeenth progenitor, her power is considerably greater than that of a human or a lesser vampire, though it is far surpassed by higher progenitors like Crowley. Her notable and unique ability in the anime is her choice of weapon. Unlike many vampires who use swords, Horn wields a long, agile whip. She employs it with great skill, using it to lash and disarm opponents, to block incoming projectiles such as Yūichirō's manifested sword attacks, and to ensnare and manipulate the movements of her enemies on the battlefield.
