Description
Kureto Hīragi is a high-ranking officer in the Japanese Imperial Demon Army, holding the rank of lieutenant general during the events of the Nagoya campaign and later rising to become the head of the influential Hīragi family. As the heir to the family’s power, he was raised in an environment of strict hierarchy and ruthless ambition, which shaped him into a man who values control and results above all personal connections. Within the military, he is a figure of absolute authority, commanding respect and fear in equal measure.
His personality is marked by cold logic and emotional detachment. He is a thoroughgoing rationalist who believes that sentimentality is a weakness and that any sacrifice, including the lives of comrades or subordinates, is justified for the greater goal. He does not hesitate to employ torture, blackmail, human experimentation, or outright betrayal if it serves his plans. Others in the story describe him as a monster, and he wears that label with the grim acceptance that someone must undertake harsh measures to secure humanity’s future. Despite this brutality, he is not simply cruel for its own sake; his actions stem from a deeply held conviction that only through absolute control can the Japanese Imperial Demon Army eradicate vampires and establish a lasting paradise.
Kureto’s driving motivation is the total annihilation of the vampire threat and the unification of the world under the army’s rule, with the Hīragi family at its head. He views this as the only path to prevent further suffering and sees himself as the one who must shoulder the moral burden of unsavory deeds so that ordinary people do not have to. This mission-oriented ruthlessness puts him at odds with characters who prioritize friendship and family bonds, making him a secondary antagonist during the Nagoya arc.
In the story, his most pivotal role is the orchestration of the covert Seraph of the End experiment at Nagoya Airport. He manipulates events so that the Moon Demon Company’s mission serves as a cover for activating the experiment, willingly sacrificing soldiers and test subjects to trigger a cataclysmic confrontation between humans, vampires, and unleashed seraphs. Concurrently, he moves against his own father, Tenri Hīragi, whom he exposes for colluding with vampires. After a decisive confrontation, he overthrows his father and seizes control of the Hīragi family, consolidating both military and political power.
His relationships are defined by utility and hierarchy rather than warmth. With his younger half-sister Shinoa Hīragi, he is distant and sees her primarily as a tool to be used when convenient. His adoptive brother Shinya Hīragi is tolerated for his combat skill, though Kureto keeps him at arm’s length and distrusts his independent streak. The genius half-sister Mahiru Hīragi was a benchmark that Kureto long strove to surpass, and her acknowledgment of his resolve continues to influence his psyche. He maintains a tense, forced alliance with Guren Ichinose, respecting the man’s abilities but ensuring loyalty through threats and hostages, creating a relationship built on mutual wariness. His aide Aoi Sangu is the one person to whom he shows a subtle, almost protective side, refusing to abandon her even when her life would be tactically simpler to discard, which his father criticized as a sign of weakness. This contradiction hints at a sliver of personal attachment beneath his otherwise impenetrable exterior.
As the Nagoya conflict unfolds, Kureto’s character reveals its complexity. While he does not undergo a dramatic moral turnaround, his actions demonstrate that his pragmatism includes a willingness to risk himself and those close to him for the grander plan. The coup against his father and the catastrophic airport experiment both exemplify his readiness to stain his own hands if it secures the outcome he envisions. In this way, he remains a consistent, if unsettling, force—a leader who accepts the role of villain for the sake of a world where others might someday live without fear.
In combat, Kureto is exceptionally powerful. He wields a cursed gear katana named Raimeiki, one of the black demon series. The blade grants him the ability to generate and control lightning, enabling devastating close-quarters strikes and precise ranged bolts. He can also channel electrical energy into his own body to dramatically enhance his physical strength, allowing him to match supernatural opponents. Beyond his weapon, he possesses an innate and formidable talent for curse magic, which he employs with calm precision. His tactical acumen is equally sharp; he prefers to direct battles from behind the lines but will personally enter the fray when faced with threats that demand his direct intervention, such as a partially transformed seraph. This combination of strategic brilliance and lethal personal power makes him one of the most dangerous individuals in the human faction.
