Description
Fujiwara no Michinaga is a prominent figure in Heiankyo, serving as the head of the city's powerful aristocratic class and effectively reigning at the pinnacle of its political hierarchy. His family holds immense ruling power, and his influence is so vast that it is said to surpass even that of the Emperor. As the master of the Light Palace, he bears the responsibility of supervising the capital, though his methods and motivations are deeply self-serving.

His personality is defined by a remarkable degree of emotional control and a calculating nature. He remains eerily calm even during catastrophic events, such as an attack on the palace or the emergence of the Crimson Moon, and he firmly vows that a Horror will never be able to claim him due to the thoroughness of his self-management. Despite this composure, he harbors a cruel and unscrupulous core. Michinaga displays a callous disregard for the lives of commoners, whom he views as disposable, and is willing to let them die to further his own ambitions or simply out of convenience. He is also shown to be enamored with the beauty of the Makai Priestess Seimei, though she consistently rebuffs his advances and gives him the slip. In the narrative of the film The Fleeting Cherry Blossom, he ultimately descends into complete villainy, showing no remorse for past atrocities like exiling a clan ancestor on false charges of treason, and eventually goes mad, welcoming death for everyone around him while believing himself untouchable.

Michinaga's primary motivation is the consolidation of his own power and wealth. He desires to live as a noble without hindrance but actively schemes to rise even higher in the imperial government, willing to sacrifice anyone to achieve his goals. A significant part of this ambition involves his desire to control a powerful Makai Knight, specifically the Golden Knight Garo, to act as his exclusive weapon to enforce his influence and win wars. This political greed drives many of his actions, including the manipulation of noble families to suit his needs.

Within the story, Michinaga serves as a major source of political corruption and a secondary antagonistic force, complicating the efforts of the protagonists who fight supernatural Horrors. He is shown issuing orders to arrest all onmyoji based on suspicion of a curse and obstructing access to the Light Palace during times of crisis, lying to the populace while stating that a rampaging Horror is doing him a favor by devouring the lower classes.

His key relationships are defined by manipulation and a lust for power. He is a strange reflection of the villain Ashiya Douman, as it is revealed that the current Douman is actually Michinaga's own brother, cast away as an infant for unknown reasons. Michinaga extends an offer for his brother to join him, which Douman refuses out of spite. He also has a critical history with the Minamoto family. To gain a Makai Knight under his control, he orchestrated a scheme where his cousin would marry the father of Raikou, the future Golden Knight. The condition for this marriage was the exile and death of Raikou and his mother, a political ploy that reveals the depths of his cruelty. He also has retainers like Abe no Haruaki, an onmyoji who acts as his right-hand man, and Minamoto no Yorinobu, a young warrior he considers one of his Four Heavenly Kings.

Throughout the series, Michinaga shows a distinct lack of redeeming development, instead revealing progressively darker layers of his character. He appears delighted by an argument that he and Ashiya Douman are the same, yet he counter-argues that Raikou and Douman are also two sides of the same coin, echoing a philosophy of yin and yang. His initial composure eventually shatters during Rudra's awakening when his protective barrier is compromised. In a moment of panic, he falsely accuses an ally and demands an execution. His final development sees him stripped of his title and arrested for his complete disregard for the safety of the capital's people after a Horror is defeated.

In terms of abilities, Michinaga is not a fighter like the Makai Knights. His power comes from his political position and his knowledge of supernatural forces. He is aware of Makai Knights, Makai Priests, and Horrors. He also possesses a magic book that maintains a powerful protective barrier around the Light Palace, the theft of which causes him to lose his composure. His greatest asset is his near-impenetrable self-control, which is so thorough that it leaves no opening for the darkness of a Horror to possess him, making him immune to that specific form of corruption.
