TV-Series
Description
Aion, also known as the World, is a central figure in the narrative of Norn9. Aion is a cyborg, an artificial being created long before the main events of the story by a scientist in a past era. This scientist shares an identical genetic makeup with the character Sorata Suzuhara. Aion is known to manifest most frequently as a girl with white or whitish-blue curly hair and a white dress, but is also capable of taking the form of a boy.
Personality-wise, Aion is depicted as being largely silent and emotionless, stating that they do not possess a heart. Despite this, Aion is driven by powerful, deeply held sentiments. Their primary motivation is a profound love for the scientist who created them. It is this love that fuels their singular goal: to be reunited with their creator. To achieve this, Aion has been executing the Reset for thousands of years, a process that wipes human civilization clean to prevent its destruction and then allows history to begin anew. Aion is described as waiting for the scientist, and this long vigil defines their existence.
In the story, Aion serves as the entity that initiates the Reset, working in conjunction with a group of people known as ability users. They are a mysterious presence on the airship Norn, generally invisible to most of the crew. Only specific individuals, such as Sorata Suzuhara and Masamune Tōshi, can see them. Aion is the reason Sorata has survived for over a thousand years; Aion placed him in a state of cold sleep, protecting him for centuries until he was awakened for the current era. Aion also possesses the power to enhance the abilities of others, such as when they enabled the character Sakuya to use his precognitive power to find a lost friend.
Aion's most significant relationship is with Sorata Suzuhara. Sorata is the only person who can truly communicate with Aion on a spiritual level, and he gives them the affectionate name "Aine". Aion has watched over Sorata for millennia, and he is the one who ultimately learns the full truth of their origin and purpose. However, a core part of Aion's development reveals that they see Sorata not as an individual, but as a substitute for the scientist they truly long for, which causes Sorata great personal conflict. Aion also has a known connection to the antagonist Shiro Yūki, who is said to have remodeled Aion for his own purposes, which include resurrecting his deceased wife. In the end, Aion's path converges with Sorata's as they decide to face the future together.
Regarding abilities, Aion is a highly advanced cyborg with formidable power. Their primary function is to enact the Reset, a world-altering event. Aion is described as having a special armor that is incredibly durable. In addition to their world-altering powers, Aion can assist other ability users, allowing them to utilize their powers more effectively, as demonstrated with Sakuya's precognition. They have also shown the ability to create illusions, such as the will-o'-wisps used during a test of courage on the ship. Aion has been in operation for over a thousand years and, despite their own systems beginning to fail, continued to protect Sorata during his long sleep.
