Description
Kirio is a significant supporting character introduced in the second half of Ushio & Tora. He appears as a young boy of elementary school age, possessing an androgynous appearance with blonde, bobbed semi-long hair, which contrasts with the more typical boyish look of the protagonist, Ushio. His background is highly unusual, as he is not a completely ordinary human. Kirio is an artificial being or an enhanced human, created through a combination of Eastern magic and Western alchemy, making him a kind of homunculus. He was developed as a result of experiments by a renegade priest named Inasa, who sought alternative weapons to defeat the great evil entity known as Hakumen no Mono. The baby that would become Kirio was stolen by a woman named Towako, and he was raised by Inasa, from whom he derives his full name, Inasa Kirio. However, the true power behind his creation and purpose was Towako herself.
Kirio is presented as a cold, aloof, and remarkably arrogant individual, especially for someone his age. He is highly confident in his own abilities and the power of his weapon, the Elzaar Scythe, believing it to be a superior alternative to the legendary Beast Spear wielded by Ushio. Despite this frigid exterior, his personality is deeply shaped by a profound yearning for belonging and maternal affection. His primary motivation throughout his early appearance is to prove his worth and power, acting largely on the instructions of Towako, whom he believes to be his mother and to whom he is obsessively devoted. He seeks validation from her and sees the destruction of the Beast Spear as his main objective, unaware that he is being manipulated as a tool.
Kirio's role in the story is initially that of a rival and antagonist to Ushio. As the fourth and final candidate to inherit the Beast Spear, he directly challenges Ushio's claim and methods, arguing that his scientifically crafted scythe is more practical and powerful than the spear, which chooses its owner. He is accompanied by a powerful yokai familiar named Kuin, who acts as his loyal bodyguard and servant, in a dynamic that mirrors the partnership of Ushio and Tora but is characterized by a strict master-servant hierarchy rather than a grudging alliance. His key relationship is with Towako, his surrogate mother, and the revelation that she is in fact an avatar of Hakumen no Mono, the very enemy she claimed to want to destroy, is the turning point for his character. This betrayal shatters Kirio's entire world, forcing him to confront the fact that he has been a pawn his entire life.
This event triggers his major character development. After the truth is revealed and he is forced to kill Towako himself, Kirio is left in a state of profound emptiness and despair, having lost his reason for living. He is not immediately redeemed or turned into a cheerful ally; instead, he is shown wandering aimlessly, psychologically devastated. Over time, he finds a new place for himself, notably being taken in by Mayuko Inoue, whose simple kindness helps him begin to heal. His development culminates in the final battle against Hakumen no Mono, where he fully embraces his role as an ally. Demonstrating his deep understanding of the Beast Spear's history and nature, he uses his abilities to aid Ushio and Tora, symbolizing his complete transformation from a tool of destruction to a genuine hero fighting for a cause he has chosen for himself.
Kirio possesses several notable abilities that make him a formidable fighter. He wields the Elzaar Scythe, a powerful weapon created by Inasa that does not require a contract or a soul-bond like the Beast Spear, making it possible to mass-produce. As an enhanced human created through alchemy, his physical capabilities, magical power, and even his healing factor are far superior to those of a normal person. He is also capable of firing a highly concentrated beam of magical energy from his eyes, a technique powerful enough to break bones. His combat prowess is significant, as he is shown to be capable of defeating powerful enemies and holding his own against major threats.
