Description
Hyou is a powerful exorcist who originally hails from China, introduced as a formidable and morally complex figure driven by a singular quest for revenge. His background is steeped in tragedy, as he once had a family including a wife named Hai Fong and a daughter named Lei Xia. That life was shattered when a monstrous yokai attacked, killing his wife and daughter, gouging out his right eye, and leaving three long claw marks across his face. He was only saved from death by his teacher, who placed a magical blue crystal ball into his empty eye socket. From that moment, Hyou abandoned his old name and life, dedicating himself entirely to the path of an exorcist and the pursuit of the demon that destroyed his family.
Hyou's personality is defined by the cold, focused rage born from this loss. He is a relentless and capable killer of yokai, known for employing tactics that can be excessively brutal. When he sees what he believes to be his family's murderer, this controlled exterior gives way to a tortured, volcanic rage. Despite this, he is not without a sense of honor. Upon realizing he has made a mistake, he is capable of regret and can become a valued ally. His actions are driven by the hope that avenging his family will finally quell the boiling rage inside him and bring him peace.
In the story, Hyou is initially positioned as an antagonist. He catches a glimpse of the yokai Tora on a television broadcast and, believing Tora is the one who killed his family, travels to Japan to exact his revenge. He is a serious threat, proving to be more than a match for Tora in their first battles. However, the protagonist Ushio Aotsuki realizes the misunderstanding and, driven by a sense of injustice, steps in to protect Tora, eventually convincing Hyou that he is hunting the wrong target. This moment pivots Hyou's role from a vengeful enemy to a temporary ally who recognizes Ushio's integrity.
Key relationships define his journey. His primary and most significant relationship is with the demon Guren, the true killer of his family. Guren is a black Azafuse, a type of yokai, and the final confrontation with him becomes Hyou's ultimate purpose. His interactions with Ushio are also crucial, as the young boy’s unwavering moral compass stops Hyou from making an irreversible mistake, leading to a mutual respect between them. His relationship with Tora is initially hostile, based entirely on a case of mistaken identity, but resolves once the truth is revealed.
Hyou undergoes a significant character development that culminates in his death. He manages to track down Guren and engages him in a long and bitter battle to the death. The fight is incredibly fierce, with both combatants sustaining grievous injuries. In a final, desperate gambit, Hyou rips out his magical crystal eye and forces it down Guren's throat. He reveals that his body is stuffed with seals, and that the eye, no longer under his control, will release all the lightning it had absorbed from Guren, causing a fatal explosion from within. He loses an arm in the process but succeeds in killing his enemy. Hyou dies not in anguish, but with a smile on his face, envisioning his wife and daughter welcoming him home as he succumbs to his wounds.
Hyou possesses a range of notable abilities that make him a highly skilled exorcist. He is a master of geomancy, the art of using seals and talismans, and is also proficient with flying spears. His most distinctive feature is his magical blue crystal eye, which saved his life and grants him special powers; most notably, it can absorb a yokai's lightning attacks directly into it. His fighting style is characterized by thorough preparation and sacrifice; he does not hesitate to use his own body as a vessel for sealing magic to ensure victory against his foe.
