Description
Osa, also known as the Osa of Tono, is a respected elder among the spirits of the Tono region. He is the leader of the many yokai who live there, and he typically presents himself as an unassuming old man. His true form, however, is that of a daitengu, a powerful and high-ranking mountain spirit. His standing among the supernatural community makes him both a protector of the land he oversees and a voice for the yokai who answer to him.

Osa is wise and kind, with a calm and patient manner that reflects his long existence. He also thinks very highly of Ushio and has great faith in the young man, which is notable because many of the spirits around him initially view Ushio with suspicion or outright hostility. When Ushio became the target of numerous yokai who recognized him as the son of Sumako Hizaki, Osa chose not to join the attacks. Instead, he revealed himself openly, explained to Ushio why he was being hunted, and asked for his cooperation. This decision shows both his judgment and his willingness to look past fear and resentment in favor of understanding.

His primary motivation is the safety and well-being of the yokai under his care. Rather than allowing conflict to escalate, he seeks to guide his people through difficult situations and to deal with outsiders fairly. His trust in Ushio comes from his ability to read character, and he consistently believes that the boy will act for the right reasons, even when other spirits doubt him.

Within the larger story, Osa serves as an important connection between Ushio and the yokai world. His willingness to stand by Ushio helps defuse a dangerous situation among the spirits of Tono and gives Ushio an ally among beings who might otherwise have been enemies. His relationship with Ushio is rooted in mutual respect, and his steady confidence in the boy remains a consistent part of his character. He also acts as a caretaker figure for the yokai community, using his authority to keep order and to make decisions on behalf of those who look to him.

Osa's notable abilities include the power to conceal his true nature behind the appearance of an ordinary elderly man, the authority to lead and speak for the many yokai under his command, and the formidable spiritual strength associated with his daitengu form. His wisdom, patience, and sound judgment are just as central to his character as his supernatural power, allowing him to protect his community and to bridge the divide between humans and spirits in times of crisis.
