Description
Kirio Inasa is a significant character introduced as a rival to the protagonist, Ushio Aotsuki. He is a young boy with an androgynous appearance, characterized by his blonde, bobbed semi-long hair. His primary role in the story is that of a candidate for the Beast Spear, though he is far from an ordinary human. Kirio is an artificial or enhanced human, created through a combination of Eastern magic and Western alchemy. This project was the work of a priest named Inasa, who broke away from the Kouhamei sect to develop a weapon capable of defeating the great white beast, Hakumen no Mono.

Kirio was stolen as an infant by a woman named Towako, who became his foster mother and the true power behind his creation. Towako used the research of Inasa to complete Kirio, raising him to be the perfect weapon against the Beast Spear. He was given the Elzar Scythe, a powerful weapon designed to rival the Beast Spear, and was paired with an artificial yokai protector named Kuin. For much of his early appearance, Kirio’s motivations are driven by a desire for praise and validation, particularly from Towako, whom he genuinely sees as his mother. He is depicted as arrogant, cocksure, and eager to prove that his scythe and his power are superior to Ushio and the Beast Spear. He operates as a tool of Towako, who secretly serves as an agent of Hakumen no Mono, manipulating Kirio to steal and attempt to destroy the Beast Spear.

His role in the story is initially that of an antagonist. He first appears publicly by delivering the finishing blow to a powerful enemy named Kuragi, stealing the credit and seeking glory. He then orchestrates a plan to steal the Beast Spear from Ushio, using a special red cloth and inciting other monks to aid him. The narrative arc reaches its climax when Towako’s true identity as an avatar of Hakumen no Mono is revealed. She attempts to discard Kirio, seeing him only as a disposable tool. This revelation shatters Kirio’s psyche; unable to accept the betrayal and his own emptiness, he ultimately kills Towako himself. This event leaves him in a state of profound psychological trauma and solitude, wandering aimlessly with no purpose.

Key relationships define his character arc. His relationship with Towako is the most central, a codependent and manipulative bond where Kirio’s filial love is met with cold utility. In contrast, his relationship with Ushio begins as pure rivalry, with Kirio seeing Ushio as weak and unworthy. However, after Towako’s betrayal, Ushio becomes a foil who represents an alternative path. While Ushio fights to protect others, Kirio’s pursuit of pure strength leads only to loneliness. Later, after a period of wandering and self-discovery, he finds a new family with Mayuko Inoue and her family, whom he saves from a yokai. He comes to call Mayuko his sister and finds a place to belong.

Kirio possesses several notable abilities. As an enhanced human, he has heightened physical capabilities, magical power, and accelerated healing. His primary weapon is the Elzar Scythe, a masterpiece of magical armament. He is skilled in close combat and can also discharge magical energy from his eyes as a beam-like attack. His partner, Kuin, acts as a powerful guardian, and together they are capable of exterminating powerful yokai. Despite his young age, which appears to be that of an elementary school student, his combat prowess is exceptional, exceeding that of most trained magic-wielding monks.
