Description
Omamori-sama is a zashiki warashi, a type of household spirit from Japanese folklore, who appears as a small girl of about seven years old with short dark hair and dark eyes. Despite her youthful appearance, she has lived for a very long time; her acquaintance with Tora indicates she is at least five hundred years old. Zashiki warashi are said to bring prosperity to the houses they inhabit and to bring decline when they leave. Relying on this property, an ancestor of the Takatori family sealed Omamori-sama inside a powerful barrier roughly two hundred years before the main events of the story, keeping her bound to the household so that the family would continue to prosper.
During her long confinement, Omamori-sama was visited and comforted by a line of white-haired women of the Takatori family, including Saya's mother. She formed a bond with them, and she came to know that a boy carrying a spear would eventually come to release her. This prophecy was fulfilled when Ushio arrived at the Takatori estate and destroyed the barrier holding her. After being freed, and after the Takatori household itself was destroyed, she chose to remain near Saya rather than leave, quietly watching over the girl.
Her personality is gentle, patient, and composed. She does not carry bitterness over her imprisonment, and she shows steady loyalty to the people who treated her with kindness. Her central motivation is protective: she wishes to see Saya safe and to help those who freed her. She sides with Ushio during the attack of the Tono, and she speaks to the yokai Osa on his behalf, using her quiet presence to support his cause. Her bond with Saya is the most personal of her relationships; her connection to Ushio is one of gratitude and alliance, while her knowledge of Tora from previous centuries marks her as one of the older spirits of the setting.
In terms of abilities, Omamori-sama has the traditional fortune-bringing nature of a zashiki warashi, and while she was sealed this power was exploited for the benefit of the Takatori family. She also possesses spiritual power of her own: she is able to close the Gates of Hell, a task she performs in place of Saya, and during the final battle she summons flames in an effort to protect Saya from harm. Her development over the story moves her from a passive, imprisoned figure who waits for liberation into an active guardian who fights alongside the central characters in the final conflict while remaining devoted to Saya to the end.
