Description
Kyouchikutou is an antagonist introduced in the series Aria the Scarlet Ammo AA. Her name translates to "oleander," a flower whose language signifies "dangerous love," a meaning that deeply reflects her nature and actions. She is also known by her real name, Momoko Suzuki, which she adopts later in the story. Although she appears to be a teenage girl, typically wearing a black school uniform with long black hair often decorated with a flower on one side, she is in fact a 24-year-old graduate of the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Tokyo. Her youthful appearance and choice of attire are a deliberate disguise. She has purple eyes and is frequently seen smoking from a pipe, which is not for tobacco but contains a bronchial medicine, and the pipe itself conceals a thin, strong wire she uses as a weapon.
Kyouchikutou is a member of the secret organisation I-U, where she belongs to the faction known as the "polishing faction". Her background is that of a highly skilled poison master, bearing the nickname "Scorpion of the Dark Palace". Her personal history is tied to a past incident involving the Mamiya clan, who refused to share their techniques with I-U. As a result, a punitive action was taken against the clan, and Kyouchikutou was one of the members who participated. This event is the source of her personal grudge against Akari Mamiya, whom she describes as a "flower she sowed two years ago" and intends to harvest. For Kyouchikutou, poison is not merely a tool but a source of immense pride; she harbors an obsessive need to know and master every poison she encounters and cannot tolerate any that are unknown to her.
In terms of personality, Kyouchikutou is generally reserved, quiet, and a genius tactician who is very skilled at covering her tracks. However, she also displays a distinct fascination with yuri, or romantic relationships between women. She strongly prefers to observe such dynamics from the sidelines rather than participate directly herself. This interest manifests in her behaviour, as she is prone to exposing herself without concern when the other person involved is female, such as when she appears naked or in states of undress during encounters with other characters. She is an otaku and a doujin writer who works under the pen name Cristiane Momoko, creating her own manga; participating in Comiket was so important to her that it became a condition of a legal transaction she later made.
Kyouchikutou's primary role in the story is that of a major antagonist. She, along with Riko Mine and Jeanne d'Arc, executes a plan to kidnap students from Tokyo Butei High School, with Akari Mamiya as her specific target. Her motivation is to reclaim a secret Mamiya poison technique known as "Takamakuri" and to settle an old score with Akari. During her confrontation with Akari, she reveals her mastery of various poisons, including a "cryptotoxin" that slowly robs a victim of their five senses, which she had previously used on Akari's sister, Nonoka. Her body is said to contain eighty-three different types of poison that she can secrete at will, and she wears gloves because her fingernails themselves are implanted with different poisons, making even a scratch potentially lethal. To this end, she also uses corrosive poison, aphrodisiacs, and even a non-recoil Gatling gun in combat, alongside her wire-manipulation skills that allow her to move as if floating or to strangle opponents from a distance.
Kyouchikutou maintains key relationships with her I-U comrades, Riko Mine and Jeanne d'Arc. They are close, often spending time together privately, and their skill levels are similar. Her relationship with Akari Mamiya is the central conflict of her arc. She is intensely interested in Akari, expressing a desire to make her a "pet" and claiming to like her the most when Akari has an angry look in her eyes. She offers Akari a chance to join I-U, promising to help her grow stronger than Aria, but this is ultimately a manipulative tactic to get what she wants.
Over the course of the story, Kyouchikutou undergoes a significant change. After being defeated by Akari, she enters into a legal transaction with the authorities. As part of this deal, she is transferred to Tokyo Butei High School under her real name, Momoko Suzuki, as a transfer student in Akari's class, with her specialty being forensics. This marks a transition from a shadowy assassin to a more integrated, though still eccentric, member of the school community. Her development continues as she later advances to the second year, becoming a classmate of Akari and other main characters, including the male protagonist Kinji Tooyama, for a brief period. Her sister, Suimitsutou, also appears later, going on a rampage to demand her return, further expanding Kyouchikutou's background.
