Description
Mari Nikaidou is a witch from the series Anti-Magic Academy: The 35th Test Platoon, widely known as the Witch of Aurora because of her rare and ancient Aurora attribute. She originally served as a conscript member of the criminal magical organization Valhalla, where she was tricked into participating in their illicit activities. Her primary motivation for joining Valhalla was to protect and support the children from the orphanage where she grew up, a selfless drive that underlies many of her actions. After her involvement with Valhalla came to light, she became the first witch to be enrolled at the Anti-Magic Academy, where she was assigned to the low‑ranked 35th Test Platoon.
In terms of personality, Mari initially presents a somewhat extreme and guarded temperament, but over time she softens and reveals a more innocent and caring nature. She can be tsundere, often combative or irritable on the surface while harboring genuine kindness and loyalty underneath. She is notably insecure about her flat chest and is frequently teased on this matter by her teammates Ouka Ootori and Ikaruga Suginami, which contributes to her occasional prickly reactions.
Mari’s role in the story shifts from a former enemy to a key ally within the 35th Test Platoon, bringing her powerful magic to the team’s missions. She develops a romantic interest in the platoon captain, Takeru Kusanagi, and her growing affection for him helps drive her personal growth and her choice to side with the Academy. She also has a tense rivalry with Ouka Ootori, whose deep hatred of magic and whose large chest represent two things Mari cannot stand. This friction evolves as both characters learn to work together.
Her abilities are centered around the Aurora attribute, which grants her access to high‑powered destructive magic as well as restorative, summoning, and defensive spells. This versatility makes her a formidable combatant and a valuable asset to the platoon. She is often seen wearing a distinctive muffler and hat, even indoors, which have become her signature features.
Throughout the series, Mari’s development is marked by her transition from a distrustful, self‑preserving witch to a more open and loyal member of the team, as she learns to trust her platoon mates and embrace her own strength for the sake of protecting others.
