Description
Kyuuta, also known as Ren, is the central human protagonist of the anime The Boy and The Beast. He is introduced as a nine-year-old boy who runs away from home after his mother’s death and the subsequent estrangement from his extended family. Orphaned and deeply lonely, Kyuuta initially survives on his own in the back alleys of Tokyo’s Shibuya district, where he is hardened by neglect but still retains a fierce, proud spirit.

Kyuuta’s personality is a blend of stubbornness, emotional vulnerability, and raw honesty. He has a quick temper and a tendency to lash out when he feels abandoned or misunderstood, which stems directly from the loss of his mother and his sense of betrayal by the human world. Despite his tough exterior, he is deeply loyal and possesses a strong moral core. He struggles to trust others, but once a bond is formed, he commits to it with all his heart. Over time, he shows a capacity for empathy, patience, and self-reflection, though he often expresses care through action rather than words.

His primary motivation changes throughout the story. Initially, he seeks only to survive and prove that he does not need anyone. After falling into the beast realm of Jutengai and meeting Kumatetsu, a brutish, lonely bear-like warrior beast, Kyuuta’s motivation shifts toward finding a place to belong. He eventually accepts Kumatetsu as his master and begins training to become a warrior, not out of ambition but out of a desire for connection and purpose. Later in the story, as he matures into a teenager, he is torn between his life in the beast world and the human world, particularly after meeting a human girl named Kaede. His final motivation becomes reconciling his two identities and confronting the growing darkness within him—a literal shadow of human doubt and rage that threatens to consume him.

Kyuuta’s role in the story is that of a bridge between two worlds. He is the narrative’s emotional anchor, and his journey from abandoned child to disciplined warrior to compassionate young adult drives the plot. Through him, the film explores themes of found family, mentorship, and self-acceptance. He also serves as a catalyst for Kumatetsu’s growth, pushing the stubborn beast to become a better teacher and, eventually, a worthy candidate for the title of Lord of the Beast Realm.

Key relationships define much of Kyuuta’s development. With Kumatetsu, his relationship begins with shouting matches, refusal to cooperate, and mutual frustration. Gradually, it deepens into a surrogate father-son bond, though neither character expresses it directly. Kumatetsu teaches Kyuuta physical strength and combat, while Kyuuta teaches Kumatetsu humility and patience. The bear beast Tatara and the monkey sage Hyakushouburu act as secondary mentors and mediators, especially when Kyuuta’s growth outpaces Kumatetsu’s teaching style. His friendship with Kaede, a human girl he meets as a teenager, introduces him to academic learning and emotional vulnerability; she helps him understand that he does not have to abandon his beast identity to belong in the human world. His biological father, whom he briefly confronts, represents the human family that failed him, and Kyuuta’s rejection of him marks a critical moment of choosing his own identity over blood ties.

Kyuuta’s development is the heart of the film. As a child, he is feral, defensive, and emotionally closed off. Under Kumatetsu’s gruff care, he slowly learns discipline, patience, and the value of hard work. As a teenager, he gains physical prowess but struggles with inner turmoil: the dark shadow known as the “hidden power” or “the darkness in his heart,” which grows as he suppresses his human pain. This shadow is a physical manifestation of his unresolved anger and self-doubt. His ultimate maturation comes when he accepts both his human and beastly sides, turning the shadow from a weapon of destruction into a source of controlled strength. He returns to the beast realm as an adult, fully integrated and able to stand as Kumatetsu’s equal.

In terms of notable abilities, Kyuuta is not born with supernatural powers but develops them through intense physical training with Kumatetsu. He becomes exceptionally strong, agile, and durable, able to fight large beasts and survive blows that would fell ordinary humans. His most distinct ability is his resistance to the “darkness” – the chaotic spiritual energy that can corrupt beasts and humans alike. Over time, he learns to channel this darkness, which appears as a shadowy doppelgänger or an extension of his fighting spirit. In the climax, he masters this power to the point where he can separate the darkness from himself and use it as a protective or combative force without losing his identity. This ability is both a curse and a gift, symbolizing his acceptance of pain and loss as part of his strength. Despite living among beasts for years, he remains physically human, aging normally and requiring human rest, food, and companionship. His greatest ability, however, is emotional: he bridges the divide between two worlds through sheer force of will and loyalty.
