Description
Hajime Iwaizumi is a third-year student at Aoba Johsai High School, where he holds the position of ace and vice-captain of the boys' volleyball team. He was born on June 10, making him a Gemini. Iwaizumi has a long and deeply rooted history with the sport, having played volleyball since childhood alongside his best friend, Toru Oikawa. Both attended Kitagawa Daiichi Junior High together, where they first developed their rivalry with players like Wakatoshi Ushijima, before continuing on to Aoba Johsai. After his high school career concludes, Iwaizumi pursues a degree in sports science and ultimately becomes an athletic trainer, working with the Japanese National Men's Volleyball Team.
Physically, Iwaizumi is characterized by his dark, spiked-up hair and slightly thicker than average eyebrows. His expression is most often serious or irked, which matches his no-nonsense demeanor. He stands at 179.3 centimeters tall. While playing, he wears the Aoba Johsai uniform with the number four, and off the court, his school uniform is often seen slightly disheveled, with his tie loose and shirt untucked.
Iwaizumi's personality is defined by a combination of stubbornness and unwavering reliability. He is a firm but caring teammate who commands the respect of his underclassmen, often providing calm and light-hearted advice to players like first-year Yudai Kindaichi. This supportive nature extends to all members of the team, including the volatile Kentaro Kyotani, who is noted to listen only to Iwaizumi because the ace has beaten him in every competition they have had. Iwaizumi is also respectful toward rivals, acknowledging the skills of players such as Tobio Kageyama rather than treating them coldly. Despite his tough exterior, he has a goofier side, including a love for monsters and a tendency to excitedly point out fish named Oikawa in books just to tease his friend.
The most significant and defining relationship in Iwaizumi's life is with Oikawa, whom he has known since early childhood and affectionately calls him Iwa-chan. On the court, the two are in complete synchronization, with Oikawa often setting to Iwaizumi during critical moments. Off the court, their dynamic is a constant give-and-take of insults and physical discipline. Iwaizumi is the primary person capable of keeping Oikawa in check, frequently scolding him for childish behavior, dragging him away from fangirls, or throwing volleyballs at his head. This forceful behavior, however, belies a deep and genuine care. Iwaizumi consistently monitors Oikawa to ensure he does not overwork himself or lose confidence, reminding him of his worth as a setter when he compares himself negatively to prodigies like Kageyama. A pivotal moment in their past occurred when a frustrated Oikawa almost struck Kageyama; Iwaizumi intervened, headbutting him and delivering a harsh lecture about how volleyball is a team sport where six strong players make each other stronger, a lesson that fundamentally changed Oikawa's perspective. After a devastating loss to Karasuno that ends their high school careers, Iwaizumi blames himself and feels unworthy of being the ace, but Oikawa is there to console him, returning the support in a moment of vulnerability.
As Aoba Johsai's ace, Iwaizumi possesses notable abilities that make him a formidable wing spiker. His greatest asset is his raw power, rated as a full five out of five in official statistics. His spikes are incredibly strong, and his serves are also powerful, capable of wearing down opponents over the course of a match. In addition to his offensive power, Iwaizumi has developed excellent receiving skills. While he admits he only found spiking fun as a child, he has since grown to take great satisfaction in digging an opponent's powerful spike and turning the play to his team's advantage. He is a dependable player who is not afraid to exploit a taller opponent's technical flaws and is known for his mental strength in crucial situations. Iwaizumi is also a strong jumper, with a recorded spike reach of 327 centimeters.
