Description
Eikichi Machimiya is a second-year student at Yonan University and a member of its bicycle racing club. Prior to his university career, he attended Kureminami Technical High School, where he was a key member of the bicycle racing club, serving as its captain during his final year and its ace rider since his second year. He is known by the nickname the Fighting Dog of Kure, a moniker that reflects his aggressive and tenacious racing style.
In terms of appearance, Machimiya has reddish-pink hair and notably bushy eyebrows that are a shade lighter. He has prominent bags under his eyes, giving him a somewhat fatigued look. A distinctive physical trait is the presence of bruises on his chest, which are self-inflicted from his unique cycling technique.
Machimiya presents a complex and often contradictory personality. He describes himself as possessing stars as well as the devil's luck, a phrase that refers to his tendency to encounter severe roadblocks yet somehow still succeed in the end. On the surface, he often appears disturbingly amiable and self-confident, using a soft, calm demeanor to interact with others. However, this friendliness is frequently a tool for manipulation. He is extremely skilled at twisting the emotions of other cyclists to his advantage, uniting them under the guise of being a cooperative ally while secretly serving his own agenda. This tactic is illustrated by his ability to rally riders from different schools into a single pack, making them believe they are part of a group decision when it is actually his own design.
Beneath this controlled exterior lies a deep well of anger and pressure. As the ace of his team, he feels intense responsibility, and he is easily wounded when he fails to live up to expectations, either his own or those of his teammates. He harbors a deep grudge against Hakone Academy, stemming from a personal encounter with their captain, Juichi Fukutomi, during a previous Inter High race. When this anger is unleashed, his nonchalant demeanor vanishes, replaced by a wild and frenzied state. In this condition, he rides at his full potential, fueled by raw hatred and becoming aggressive even towards his own teammates. Other cyclists speculate that this volatile state might be his true personality, and that his usual calm and confident self is merely another deception. Despite these darker traits, Machimiya respects a sound defeat in a fair battle and can calmly acknowledge when an opponent's strength is superior.
Machimiya's primary motivation in the story is revenge against Hakone Academy and specifically Juichi Fukutomi. During the previous Inter High, which took place in his hometown of Hiroshima, his water bottles broke, and Fukutomi refused to lend him a replacement. Machimiya performed poorly that day and squarely blamed Fukutomi for his troubles. This grudge drives him to utilize his intelligence and devise complex plans to finally defeat his rival. His role in the race is that of a cunning tactician who seeks to manipulate the entire field of riders to achieve his goal.
His key relationships are defined by this grudge and his manipulative nature. His animosity towards Juichi Fukutomi is the core driver of his actions. He also has a significant rivalry with Yasutomo Arakita of Hakone Academy. Their confrontation during the Inter High is intense, with Machimiya headbutting Arakita to draw blood. However, Arakita sees his own past self in Machimiya and, after winning their battle, offers to buy him a Bepsi. Machimiya accepts the loss with surprising grace, coming to admire Arakita and looking forward to that drink. Within his own team, he relies heavily on Ryo Ibitani, who greatly admires him and helps carry out his plans. He is also able to strike a temporary deal with Akira Midousuji of Kyoto Fushimi, agreeing to work together to defeat Hakone Academy, though Midousuji discards him once he is no longer useful.
Over the course of his appearance, Machimiya undergoes a notable development. He begins consumed by his desire for revenge, using the pack and forming alliances solely to bring down Hakone. This obsession causes him to miss crucial opportunities to help his own team reach the leading group. His fierce battle with Yasutomo Arakita becomes a turning point. Arakita's words about not moving forward while hung up on the past, and his own admission that Arakita was right, signal a shift. He accepts his defeat and watches Arakita ride away in awe, suggesting he is learning to channel his intense emotions more constructively. Later information reveals that he attends Yonan University alongside both Arakita and Shingo Kinjou, and following a secret meeting arranged by Ibitani, he reconciles and begins dating his former girlfriend, Kana.
In terms of abilities, Machimiya is a talented and powerful cyclist. His most notable technique is his unique dancing style. This sprint involves him lowering his chest as close as possible to his handlebars to achieve an aerodynamic position. He hits his chest against the handlebars, which has caused the distinctive bruises that resemble eyes to form. The position forces his shoulder blades to jut out of his back, and this violent, aggressive sprint allows him to attain high speeds. Apart from his physical cycling skills, his greatest weapon is his intellect and psychological manipulation. He is a skilled con artist who puts on airs of friendliness to get other riders to do his bidding, using them as pawns and pitting them against each other. He also has practical skills, being good at mechanical engineering, including operating a lathe, and he used these skills to craft sturdy metal water bottles. He is also adept at cooking teppanyaki.
