Description
Jinpachi Tōdō is a third-year student at Hakone Academy and serves as the ace climber and vice-captain of its prestigious bicycle racing club. He was raised in the historic hot spring inn Tōdō-An, a family business in Hakone that has been operating since the Meiji era. Growing up in this mountainous region, he unknowingly built endurance through childhood hikes, learning to walk with a stable core to minimize wasted energy.

Initially, Tōdō showed little interest in road racing, dismissing it because bicycle helmets would mess up his hair. His entry into the sport came during middle school when a friend, Shusaku Itokawa, challenged him to a race. Using a noisy, poorly maintained city bicycle he nicknamed the Super Shopping Cart, Tōdō discovered he could eliminate its rattling sounds by pedaling with perfect, lossless form. This experience laid the foundation for his distinctive climbing technique. He rode Itokawa's white Ridley bicycle to victory in the Hakone Road Hill Climb, a moment that sparked his passion for cycling.

Tōdō is a flamboyant and unapologetic narcissist who consistently refers to himself as a beauty and claims the title of the most attractive member of the Hakone team. He is extremely outgoing, sociable, and popular, commanding a genuine fan club of female admirers. His personality is loud, exuberant, and often theatrical, and he has a habit of lecturing others on topics ranging from healthy eating to proper training methods. Despite his boastful exterior, he is deeply loyal and caring toward his teammates and rivals, and his concern for their well-being is sincere. Underneath his eccentric and seemingly childish demeanor lies a sharp, analytical mind and a strategic thinker; he is the vice-captain precisely because he can make level-headed decisions and maintain calm when others cannot. He takes racing seriously, and his attitude becomes focused and intense when climbing.

His primary motivation is not just victory but the thrill of a worthy challenge. He fiercely craves the spotlight and enjoys being the center of attention, but this desire is balanced by a genuine love for cycling and the personal growth that comes from competition. He is particularly driven by his rivalry with Yusuke Makishima of Sohoku High School, a climber of equal skill.

In the story, Tōdō's central role is as Hakone Academy's top climber and a key obstacle for the protagonist team. He is responsible for securing the mountain checkpoint during the Inter-High relay race. His relationships are a defining aspect of his character. His bond with Makishima is the most significant; they met during a hill climb competition in their second year and have since developed a deep rivalry and friendship, with their official match record standing at seven wins and seven losses prior to their final confrontation. Tōdō affectionately calls Makishima Maki-chan and frequently calls or texts him, much to the other's annoyance. This rivalry is built on mutual respect and a shared desire to push each other to their limits. He also acts as a mentor to younger climbers like Manami Sangaku and even extends respect to Sakamichi Onoda after witnessing his determination. His relationship with his captain, Juichi Fukutomi, is such that Tōdō is the only one who can manage him when problems arise.

Throughout the series, Tōdō develops from a self-centered rider focused on his own beauty and victory into a true team player who values collaboration and acknowledges the role of his rivals in his own growth. His emotional maturity is showcased when he prioritizes his team's needs over his personal desire for a one-on-one battle with Makishima, and conversely, when he expresses profound gratitude after they finally get to race each other fully.

His most notable ability is his climbing technique, which he calls Sleeping Beauty. It is characterized by an eerily silent and smooth acceleration, as if the bicycle is running on a single rail. This lossless pedaling keeps his upper body completely still, allowing him to stealthily approach and pass competitors without being heard, leading others to nickname him the Forest Ninja. This technique was honed by learning to ride his noisy city bicycle without making a sound and is also influenced by the efficient walking style he learned during mountain hikes as a child. He rides a white Ridley bicycle, a brand he has used since his middle school days.
