Description
Gatchan, whose full name is Gadzilla Norimaki, is a major character from the comedic manga and anime series created by Akira Toriyama. Gatchan is a small, green-haired, cherub-like creature with a pair of wings and two antennae on its head. The character has no defined gender, and the series refers to Gatchan using both masculine and feminine pronouns. The name Gatchan is a combination of the names of the famous movie monsters Gamera and Gojira (Godzilla), a name given to the creature by Arale Norimaki, reflecting her love of monsters.

The background of Gatchan is a blend of absurdist comedy and cosmic revelation. The character was born from a mysterious egg that the inventor Senbei Norimaki brought back to Penguin Village from a trip to the prehistoric ages, believing it to be a dinosaur egg. When the egg hatched, Gatchan emerged fully clothed and was subsequently adopted into the Norimaki family. It is later revealed that Gatchan is actually an angel, a cherub sent to Earth by a god-like being called Kami, the lord of the galaxy. Kami's original plan was for Gatchan to halt the development of human civilization by consuming all of the planet's metal resources, thereby keeping humanity in a primitive and innocent state. However, because Senbei inadvertently brought the egg from the distant past to the present day, Gatchan's purpose was subverted, and it instead became a beloved member of the Norimaki household.

In terms of personality, Gatchan is innocent, playful, and has a demeanor very similar to Arale, the robot girl who becomes its adoptive sibling. The creature does not speak a human language, communicating instead in its own unique gibberish, sometimes referred to as Gatchanism, which consists of sounds like "koo pee pee". Remarkably, Arale seems to understand Gatchan perfectly, making them close companions who communicate with ease. Gatchan has an enormous and indiscriminate appetite, capable of eating almost any type of matter, with rubber being a notable exception. It has a particular fondness for consuming metal objects. Beyond eating, Gatchan can fly using its wings and possesses the ability to shoot powerful rays or electric blasts from the antennae on its head, often used as a form of retaliation.

Gatchan's role in the story is primarily that of a loyal companion to Arale, frequently joining her on her whimsical adventures and mischievous activities around Penguin Village. The character is a constant presence in the Norimaki household, often seen sleeping on Senbei's head or following Arale to school. Key relationships define Gatchan's existence. The strongest bond is with Arale, who is arguably the only one who fully understands Gatchan and with whom it shares a deep, sibling-like connection. Senbei serves as a paternal figure, a creator and caretaker who accepts the bizarre creature into his family despite his frequent exasperation. The character also undergoes a significant development when, after a particularly large meal, Gatchan spins a cocoon around itself. After two weeks, it emerges having split into two identical twins, who are subsequently referred to as Gatchan #1 and Gatchan #2. This duplication is a key part of its original angelic nature. Ultimately, when Kami arrives to check on its progress and is ready to destroy humanity for its failures, he is moved by the happy, peaceful life Gatchan has found in Penguin Village and decides to spare the Earth. This moment demonstrates that its role shifted from a divine instrument of stagnation to a creature who simply enjoys its found family.

Notable abilities of Gatchan are extensive. In addition to flight and energy projection, it has superhuman strength, durability that allows it to survive falls from great heights, and its stomach seems to have no limit to what it can consume. Gatchan can also breathe in space, allowing it to fly through the cosmos unaided. The creature can produce a silk-like thread to form its cocoon for metamorphosis. As a character in a gag manga, Gatchan also frequently demonstrates toon force, the ability to warp reality, physics, and logic for comedic effect, such as by stretching its body or pulling objects from thin air. This inherent nature makes it an immensely powerful and unpredictable being within its fictional world.
