Description
Kinoko Sarada is a toddler who lives in the bizarre and vibrant Penguin Village, the primary setting for her appearances. Her Japanese name carries a playful meaning that translates to "Mushroom Salad," a theme visually reinforced by the unique design of her family home, which is shaped like a large mushroom. She is a recurring character, easily recognized by her distinctive appearance which includes her black, neck-length hair often tied with ribbons.

In terms of personality, Kinoko is defined by a strong-willed and somewhat precocious nature. Her most prominent trait is an intense obsession with being fashionable and modern, although her understanding of what these concepts truly mean is often shallow and self-serving. This manifests as a habit of mocking and looking down on others, particularly Arale Norimaki and Gatchan, for their perceived lack of style or outdated clothing. Despite this haughty and intolerant attitude, there is a notable layer of insecurity beneath her vanity. She secretly envies Arale's incredible strength and her ability to effortlessly attract a large circle of friends. This jealousy creates a complicated dynamic where Kinoko, despite her claims of superiority, can often be found following Arale around, acting out of a desire for the same popularity she openly scorns.

Kinoko's role in the stories of Penguin Village is that of a minor but recurring foil to the main cast, primarily Arale. Her motivations are simple and centered on her own vanity and social standing. A typical day for Kinoko involves riding her tricycle around the village, keeping a critical eye on the fashion choices of the other residents, and offering unsolicited, often rude, critiques. She is not a hero or a villain but a self-absorbed child whose antics contribute to the comedic and chaotic atmosphere of the village.

Her key relationships are largely defined by her envy and rivalry. Her interactions with Arale are the most prominent, characterized by a mix of mockery and reluctant admiration. This dynamic extends to other characters as well. On one occasion, she misinterpreted the intentions of Obotchaman, assuming his approach was an invitation for a date, only to become offended when he revealed his actual interest was in finding Arale. In another episode, a fortune teller's prediction led the head of the Kanariya High Gang to believe Kinoko was his destined bride; he subsequently proposed to her, and Kinoko reacted with a satisfied expression, hinting at a possible, though unexplored, romantic interest from her side. She has also had direct encounters with characters from the wider world of Dragon Ball, as she was seen riding her tricycle during the General Blue Saga, where Goku stopped to ask her for directions. Her family life is also shown on occasion; she lives with her parents and has at least two sisters, including a younger sister named Retasu Sarada.

There is little significant character development for Kinoko across most of the original series, as she remains a static, minor character whose role is defined by her fashion-focused mockery and fleeting engagements with the plot. However, in the official sequel manga, The Brief Return of Dr. Slump, which takes place over a year after the original series concluded, she is shown to have grown up a little and now has a younger sister.

Regarding her abilities, Kinoko possesses no supernatural powers or unique skills. Her most notable attributes are her ability to ride a tricycle and her self-proclaimed expertise in fashion, which she uses primarily as a tool to assert her perceived superiority over her peers. A trivial detail known about her is that her blood type is A.
