OVA
Description
Mashisu Makibi, later known as Mashisu Kuramitsu, is a secondary character who first appears in the third OVA series of Tenchi Muyo Ryo-Ohki. She enters the story as the second‑in‑command of the Choubimaru, a powerful Kuramitsu family starship, under the command of Misao Kuramitsu. Her initial involvement with Misao began years earlier when, as a young girl, she was accidentally struck by a tennis ball he had hit. The encounter led to a friendship with his family, including his older sister Mihoshi.
Mashisu is depicted as a level‑headed and pragmatic officer who is deeply loyal to Misao. When Misao is given orders to use the Choubimaru to rescue Mihoshi from what he believes is Tenchi Masaki’s captivity, Mashisu becomes alarmed. She knows the plan includes the potential destruction of Earth and that Misao has been misled by a forged letter. Her personality is defined by a strong moral compass paired with a protective instinct. Rather than directly disobey orders, she attempts to reason with Misao to alter the plan, even physically restraining him to prevent him from being seen as violent. Unable to dissuade him, she secretly devises a fallback scheme: to provoke Ryoko into attacking the Choubimaru and make it appear as though a battle overloads the ship’s core, thereby avoiding the use of its planet‑destroying weapon and sparing both Misao and Mihoshi from the consequences of Tenchi’s death.
Her motivations are twofold. On the surface, she wants to prevent a catastrophic act that would leave Misao with unbearable guilt and ignite a conflict with Earth. Beneath that, she has carried a romantic affection for Misao since their childhood meeting, a feeling she keeps hidden out of duty and fear of rejection. These motives drive nearly all of her actions during the Choubimaru incident.
In the story, Mashisu serves as the moral counterweight to Misao’s rash intentions. She orchestrates a mission to have her subordinates Baguma, Fujimasa, and Sorunaru engage Ryoko, Ayeka, and Washu, while she personally attempts to capture Sasami. However, the plan fails when each of her allies is easily defeated by the Jurai princesses and their allies. During her confrontation with Sasami, the young princess perceives Mashisu’s hidden feelings for Misao and challenges her to a fair fight. Mashisu accepts, putting aside her weapon, but is defeated by Sasami’s skill. Later, when a drunken Ryoko begins attacking the Choubimaru, Mashisu rushes back to the bridge to persuade Misao to abandon ship. In the chaos, an explosion apparently injures her fatally, prompting Misao to admit his own love for her. It is then revealed that the injury was an illusion created by Washu to teach Misao a lesson. After the incident, Mashisu is punished by Mikami Kuramitsu with six months of toilet‑cleaning duty at Galaxy Police headquarters. When Misao asks to have her accompany him during his own punishment, Minami Kuramitsu dismisses her as unworthy. Seto Kamiki Jurai offers to adopt Mashisu so that she may marry Misao, and with the approval of Misao’s mother Mitoto and the Kuramitsu family counsel, the marriage is accepted.
Her key relationships center on Misao, whom she eventually marries, becoming Mashisu Kuramitsu. She also forms a bond with Seto, who facilitates the union, and interacts with the Masaki household, particularly Sasami, who helps her acknowledge her love. Her subordinates, while not deeply explored, are loyal to her. In the subsequent series Tenchi Muyo GXP, Mashisu appears briefly as the commander of the Choubimaru. She assists Fuku, Misao’s younger relative, when the Kamidake II is attacked by Daluma Guild pirates, chasing them off with the Choubimaru’s weapons and Ryo‑Ohki’s help.
Her development is marked by a transition from a subordinate who follows orders to a proactive leader willing to risk her career and safety for what is right. Her hidden romantic feelings are brought into the open, leading to a marriage that elevates her social standing within the Kuramitsu family. She begins as a pragmatic officer caught in a moral dilemma and ends as a capable commander and trusted partner.
Notable abilities include starship command and tactical planning. She is proficient with an energy whip and has basic combat training, though she is not a match for the superhuman abilities of the Jurai princesses. Her real strength lies in her resourcefulness, loyalty, and ability to think under pressure, qualities that eventually earn her command of the Choubimaru.
