Description
Gamlin Kizaki is a central figure in the Macross 7 saga, including the Macross 7 Encore episodes, where he serves as an ace pilot for the U.N. Spacy's elite Diamond Force squadron. Born on January 17, 2026, in HG Wells City on Mars, his path to becoming a pilot was forged in a poignant childhood moment. Standing at his father's funeral, the distant sound of jet fighters captured his imagination, and he watched them ascend into the sky, an experience that solidified his lifelong ambition. He enrolled in the U.N. Spacy Aviation Academy at the age of fifteen on a scholarship, demonstrating extraordinary dedication by completing the rigorous three-year program in just two years.

Gamlin's personality is defined by a sharp contrast between his professional and personal life. In combat, he is the ideal soldier: dedicated, disciplined, and fiercely competent, showing a passionate and sometimes hot-blooded nature that can lead him to defy orders in the heat of battle. He is a close-quarters combatant as well as a pilot, and he takes the injuries or loss of his squadron mates deeply to heart. However, outside of his military duties, he is notably shy, socially awkward, and reserved, a result of having spent his formative years in focused military training. This awkwardness extends to matters of romance, which he sometimes approaches with the same rigid formality as a military exercise. He consistently uses polite and formal language with everyone, including his friends, maintaining a certain professional distance.

His motivations are heavily driven by a sense of duty and a growing personal conflict. Initially, Gamlin is a by-the-book soldier who believes in the clear-cut application of military force. This worldview is challenged by the arrival of Basara Nekki, a civilian musician who pilots a red Valkyrie into battle not to fight, but to sing at the enemy. Gamlin finds Basara's pacifistic and seemingly chaotic methods infuriating and unprofessional, creating a powerful rivalry between them. This professional frustration is compounded by his personal feelings for Mylene Flare Jenius, the bassist of the band Fire Bomber. Mylene is also the youngest daughter of his former instructor and mayor of City 7, Milia Fallyna Jenius, who had initially arranged for Gamlin to meet her with the hopes of a marriage. While Gamlin was initially uninterested, seeing Mylene as a child, he soon falls in love with her, only to find himself competing with Basara for her affection, as Mylene is drawn to the singer's passion and freedom.

Gamlin's role in the story is that of a dedicated protector and a man of order struggling to adapt to a changing reality. As a member of Diamond Force, he is on the front lines of the conflict against the alien Protodeviln. His strict adherence to military protocol is constantly tested by Basara's interference, but as the series progresses, he begins to witness the tangible effects of Basara's songs, which can revitalize drained spirits and even defeat the enemy. Through his relationship with Mylene and shared battles, he grudgingly comes to respect Basara's piloting skill, which he admits is superior, and eventually understands and accepts the power of his music. His development is marked by a loosening of his rigid formality. His friendship with Mylene encourages him to behave less formally in daily life, and he grows from a man who simply follows orders into one who is willing to take great personal risks. In a pivotal moment of conscience, he punches a superior officer, Colonel Burton, for endangering Mylene's life, an act for which he accepts responsibility and briefly leaves the military before eventually returning to protect the Sound Force on his own terms.

In terms of abilities, Gamlin Kizaki is considered an elite ace pilot and something of a prodigy, having been a protege of the legendary Zentradi ace Milia Jenius. He is the only trainee in his class who could keep up with her during a punishing high-altitude ascent exercise, which sealed his reputation and graduation. He maintains intense focus in stressful situations and relies on his sharp instincts. His primary variable fighter is the formidable VF-17 Nightmare, a craft he handles to its full potential. However, his skills are so attuned to advanced, high-performance machines that he struggles with older models, such as when Milia's VF-1J Valkyrie was shot down while he was piloting it. He is known for signature moves, including a physical attack dubbed the Gamlin Kick, a powerful maneuver inspired by Kamen Rider. Over the course of his career, he pilots several other advanced craft, including the VF-22 Sturmvogel II. By the finale of the Protodeviln war, he has matured into a captain and the leader of Diamond Force, tasked with the direct protection of City 7 and its residents.
