Description
Ken Nakajima is a motorcycle patrol officer assigned to the Bokuto Precinct. His peers sometimes call him the White Hawk, a nickname that reflects his remarkable skill on a motorcycle, which is so advanced he could likely have pursued a successful career as a professional racer if he had chosen that path. He is the only son of Daimaru Nakajima, who runs a motorbike shop called Zapper, and the stepson of his teenage stepmother, Sena Wakabayashi. His family originates from Mie Prefecture, and his father was widowed before the events of the series.
Physically, Ken is strong, tall, and conventionally handsome, often seen wearing sunglasses. This tough and sturdy exterior, however, stands in stark contrast to his true personality. At his core, Ken is terribly shy and introverted, an awkwardness that becomes most pronounced whenever he is near his fellow officer, Miyuki Kobayakawa. He harbors strong romantic feelings for Miyuki, but both are painfully shy, leading to a relationship that progresses very slowly, marked by missed opportunities and an inability to directly confess their emotions. This behavior, which includes chickening out at crucial moments and displaying neurotic worrying, is a source of much of the series' comedy. His personality is a point of division among viewers; some find his clumsy antics and emotional overreactions to be endearing and adorkable, while others see them as pathetic and irritating.
In his role at the precinct, Ken's primary motivation is to be an effective officer, and he takes great pride in his work as a motorcyclist chasing down offenders. Despite his professional skill, he is not immune to failure and occasionally becomes the butt of jokes, sometimes falling off his bike or sustaining minor injuries during a chase. His lack of literacy or tendency toward clumsiness has led to him being labeled as part of a famously inept duo with Inspector Tokuno. He draws well, possessing a talent for creating facial composites, though this ability has also led to comedic situations. He and his colleague Natsumi Tsujimoto share a deep interest in motorcycles and have a very familiar, friendly relationship that involves playful roughhousing, yet they have no romantic interest in each other, a fact that sometimes confuses outsiders.
Ken's most significant relationship is with Miyuki Kobayakawa. Their mutual shyness means they often address each other by their last names and their progress as a couple is slow, causing frustration for their colleagues who actively try to support the pairing. At one point, a potential rival appears in the form of a mechanic named Honda, which forces both Ken and Miyuki to confront their feelings. His friendship with Natsumi is also notable; they share a bond over bikes, and a drunk Natsumi once caused a misunderstanding by staying overnight, leading to a comedic situation that left Miyuki in despair. Throughout the series, Ken shows some development, slowly learning to navigate his relationship with Miyuki. He also faces personal challenges, such as overcoming a temporary speed phobia developed after an accident, a trial he overcomes with the help of his colleagues. He uses various motorcycles throughout the series, including a Suzuki GSX-R750 for police work and a Yamaha V-Max when off-duty.
