OVA
Description
Kotori Monou is the younger sister of Fuuma Monou and a central figure in the X OAV, an early animated adaptation of the story. She is a delicate teenage girl who lives with a congenital heart condition, which leaves her physically frail and often dependent on others for care. Despite these limitations, she carries an inner resilience and a quiet warmth that draw others to her.

Her personality is gentle, compassionate, and remarkably forgiving. Even when Kamui Shiro, her childhood friend, returns to her life with a deliberately cold and distant attitude designed to push her away, Kotori remains steadfastly kind toward him. She does not respond with anger or resentment, instead offering patience and an unwavering belief in the bond they once shared. This kindness is not born of naivety but of a deep emotional core that refuses to harden in the face of pain.

Kotori is a developing yumemi, a dreamseer, gifted with an emerging ability to perceive future events and hidden truths in her dreams. This power begins to stir as the apocalyptic conflict draws closer, granting her visions and a psychic connection to the world beyond ordinary perception. She can also communicate with plants and animals, an affinity that underscores her harmonious nature and sensitivity to life. Her abilities are still growing at the time of the story, and they mark her as a person of spiritual significance in the battle for the fate of humanity.

Her primary motivation is not power or ambition but a deep desire for the safety and happiness of those she loves. She wishes for Kamui to rediscover the person he was and to escape the burden of destiny that surrounds him. She also cares deeply for her brother Fuuma, trusting in his goodness even as the forces of fate begin to pull them apart. Above all, Kotori longs for a peaceful, ordinary life away from the violence and sorrow that intrude upon her world.

In the OAV, Kotori plays a crucial, tragic role in the story. The return of Kamui and the prophecy surrounding the end of the world hinge on his choice of allegiance: to the Dragons of Heaven or the Dragons of Earth. Kamui's decision is heavily influenced by his desire to protect Kotori. Because he resolves to shield her from harm, he ultimately aligns with the Dragons of Heaven, which in turn forces Fuuma to become the Dark Kamui, the opposing force. Kotori thus becomes the catalyst for the entire conflict, her existence the fulcrum on which destiny pivots.

Her relationship with Kamui is the emotional heart of her arc. The two were inseparable as children, and Kamui once promised to protect her always. When he tries to sever that connection for her own safety, Kotori's persistent, quiet affection and her refusal to give up on him serve as a moral anchor, reminding Kamui of what he truly values. Her bond with Fuuma is equally profound. She loves and trusts him completely, making his transformation into her killer all the more devastating.

The OAV presents a particularly harrowing version of her fate. As the second Sacred Sword must be drawn from her body, Fuuma, now acting as the Dark Kamui, corners her. In the dreamscape she attempts to flee with Kamui’s help, but Fuuma ultimately catches her and pulls the Sacred Sword from her abdomen with his bare hands, killing her. Her death occurs in front of Kamui and other allies, and it shatters the emotional landscape of the story. Kamui carries her body to Tokyo Tower before the final battle, a silent testament to what has been lost.

Kotori’s brief narrative trajectory is one of innocence tested beyond endurance and a pure heart ultimately sacrificed. She does not undergo a prolonged personal evolution in the OAV; rather, her development lies in the awakening of her dreamseeing abilities and the increasing weight of destiny pressing upon her. Her spirit later lingers, offering solace to another dreamseer, underscoring her lasting influence beyond death. Her notable abilities include her burgeoning dreamseer powers, her empathic connection with nature, and the intangible light she represents to those fighting against the encroaching darkness. She is both the series' vessel of hope and the tragic cost of a world on the brink.
