Description
Ikki Yoneda is a pivotal supporting character in the Sakura Wars series, serving as the general commander of the Imperial Combat Revue and the general manager of the Imperial Opera Troupe, the organization's public front. Born in Tokyo on April 1st, 1861, he holds the rank of lieutenant general in the Imperial Army. His background is deeply rooted in military history, having been a decorated hero in the Russo-Japanese War, where he was promoted following his command of a retreat in a fictional battle at Changchun. Prior to the events of the series, he was a member of the original Army Anti-Demon Squad, fighting alongside Kazuma Shinguji, Shinnosuke Yamazaki, and Ayame Fujieda during a catastrophic conflict known as the Demon War.

In terms of personality, Yoneda presents a deceptively simple exterior. He is most often seen in his office at the theater, seemingly indulging in his love for sake, which gives him a relaxed, playful, and sometimes crudely humorous demeanor. This drunken, carefree attitude often serves to obscure his true nature as a brilliant strategist and a deeply caring leader. Beneath the surface, he carries a significant emotional burden and a profound sense of guilt. Having witnessed the loss of his younger comrades in the Demon War, he is haunted by the reality that he must now send young women into battle as the pilots of the spiritual armor mecha. He frequently expresses the sentiment that a father should never send his own daughters into a deadly battlefield, reflecting his internal conflict over his role.

Yoneda's primary motivation is the protection of Tokyo and its people from demonic threats, but more personally, he is driven to ensure the safety and well-being of the members of the Flower Division, whom he regards as his own children. His role in the story is that of a mentor and commanding officer, particularly to the protagonist, Ichiro Ogami. He constantly tests Ogami's character, not looking for a soldier who would sacrifice subordinates for victory, but for a leader who genuinely cares for his crew. He is the architect of the Imperial Combat Revue's strategy and provides guidance from the rear, though he is always prepared to put himself in harm's way for his charges.

Key relationships define much of his character arc. He shares a deep, familial bond with Sakura Shinguji, the daughter of his late comrade Kazuma; Sakura regards him as a second father. His relationship with Ogami evolves from that of a testing superior to a mentor who eventually entrusts him with the future of the Combat Revue. His past is intricately tied to his former squadmates, especially Ayame Fujieda, his trusted deputy, and Shinnosuke Yamazaki, whose tragic fall into villainy as the demon Aoi Satan continues to be a source of great pain and a reminder of the costs of their mission.

Throughout the series, Yoneda undergoes significant development, primarily defined by his transition from an active commander to a retired guardian. After the events of the fourth game, he passes the torch of leadership and the position of theater manager to Ogami, retiring with the confidence that his beloved Flower Division is in capable hands. He survives several brushes with death, including being shot by a traitorous secretary, demonstrating his resilience and determination to return to his family at the theater.

Regarding notable abilities, Yoneda is not a pilot of spiritual armor in the main series. Instead, his skills lie in strategy and leadership. He is known as a great strategist who can secure victory with minimal losses. In his younger days, he fought on the front lines with a katana, his personal sword named "Divine Blade Metsuga," but by the time of the series, he has lost much of his spiritual power and commands from headquarters. His true strength is his unwavering dedication to his subordinates and his ability to orchestrate their efforts from the shadows, ensuring they have the support and wisdom needed to succeed.
