Description
The character known as Fatman is a major antagonist in the animated film adaptation of Spriggan. His true name is never revealed, and his codename is a direct reference to the Fat Man atomic bomb that was detonated over Nagasaki during World War II. He is a colossal cyborg soldier serving as a high-ranking operative for the U.S. Machine Corps, a rogue military faction within the Pentagon that seeks global domination.
Prior to his tenure with the Machine Corps, Fatman was a handler for Project COSMOS, a secret black-ops program designed to raise and train children into perfect, ruthless soldiers. In this capacity, he was personally responsible for the brutal training of a young Yu Ominae. The project came to a violent end when Yu discovered the true, cruel nature of the experiments performed on him and the other children. In his escape, Yu turned on his handlers, slaughtering them all. Fatman was one of the few to survive the encounter, though he was left with catastrophic, life-threatening injuries.
These injuries necessitated an extensive cybernetic rebuild by the Machine Corps. Fatman was transformed into a walking tank, his body reinforced with Orihalcon armor plating that makes him incredibly resilient to conventional weaponry. Most notably, his right arm was replaced with a mechanical prosthesis typically fitted with a devastating Vulcan rotary cannon for combat, turning his limb into a heavy weapon of mass destruction. His physical appearance is that of an enormous, hulking figure with no visible hair and black eyes, and he is often depicted smoking a cigar, adding to his menacing and brute-force demeanor.
Personality-wise, Fatman embodies the role of a relentless, tank-like soldier. While his primary objective is the Machine Corps' mission to secure ancient artifacts like the Ark of Noah, his driving personal motivation is a burning desire for vengeance against Yu Ominae, his former protégé who nearly killed him. He is methodical in his cruelty, demonstrated when he lures Yu to the Ark excavation site in Turkey by abducting and murdering several of Yu's friends and colleagues, leaving a taunting message on each body that read Noah will be your grave. His role in the story is that of a primary physical threat and a dark mirror to the protagonist, embodying the violent past that created Yu.
Fatman operates alongside a partner codenamed Little Boy, the two forming a duo whose names together represent the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. While Little Boy is more sadistic and uses weapons like monomolecular wire, Fatman provides overwhelming, direct firepower and physical domination. The two serve under their superior, Colonel MacDougall, a psychic cyborg child. Fatman’s key relationship is with Yu Ominae, representing the abusive mentor Yu had to destroy to gain his freedom and whom he must now confront again.
His development culminates in a final battle on the snowy slopes of Mount Ararat. During the fight, Fatman uses his immense size and strength to overpower Yu, catching the younger Spriggan in his grip and preparing to crush him. However, as he begins to squeeze, Yu enters a focused, trance-like killing state. In one swift motion, Yu uses an Orihalcon combat knife to sever Fatman's mechanical hand. As the enraged cyborg opens fire with his gatling gun, Yu commandeers an ARCAM jeep and fires its heavy cannon directly at Fatman, shredding through his Orihalcon armor and killing him.
Fatman's notable abilities are entirely rooted in his cybernetic enhancements. Beyond his immense strength and size, his primary asset is his prosthetic arm, which mounts a high-caliber gatling gun capable of mowing down squads of soldiers and destroying vehicles. His body is shielded with Orihalcon, a super-metallic compound from the lost ancient civilization, rendering him nearly impervious to standard firearms and explosives. This combination of extreme durability and overwhelming firepower makes him one of the most formidable physical combatants Yu ever faces.
