Xu Fu, also known as Jofuku in Japan, is an immortal alchemist whose life spans over 2,200 years. Originating in China's Qin Dynasty, he was tasked by Emperor Qin Shi Huang to find the Elixir of Immortality. His quest led him to Mount Kinryu in Saga Prefecture, where the hermit Anqi Sheng granted him the "Furofuki" elixir. This immortality binds him directly to Saga's prosperity: he appears younger and stronger when Saga thrives but ages and weakens as it declines. During the Meiji Era (1868–1912), Saga's temporary removal from Japan's map critically weakened Xu Fu, reducing him to a frail, elderly state reliant on a staff. Hysterically seeking help to restore Saga, he recruited the young man Kiichi Momozaki. He also formed a close bond with Yugiri, a courtesan executed in 1882 after taking blame for a rebellion aimed at restoring Saga's status. Yugiri cared for him during his frailty, indirectly aiding both Saga's revival and his own recovery. By 1989, amidst Saga's economic boom, Xu Fu manifested as a younger, stockier figure with blonde hair. He adopted Tae Yamada, a former office worker and secret demon slayer, becoming her overprotective father figure while managing the Karatsu Burgers chain. He founded and led the "Sagako Busters," a team combating "Sagako"—physical manifestations of Saga's curse terrorizing prosperous areas. When Tae sacrificed herself to seal the curse's leader, Magatsuhi, Xu Fu reassured her friend Eikichi that her soul would continue protecting Saga. By 1994, rejuvenated into a stable, gray-haired form, he opened the bar "New Jofuku" in Saga City. In the present day, Xu Fu mentors Kotaro Tatsumi, supporting the "Zombie Land Saga Project" to revitalize Saga through the zombie idol group Franchouchou. While outwardly critical of Kotaro, he respects their shared goal. His abilities encompass necromancy (used to resurrect Franchouchou's members), limited clairvoyance, sensing supernatural threats, and communication through technology like televisions. His physical state fluctuates with Saga's condition, and he detects disturbances such as the "Curse of Saga," an antagonistic force causing misfortunes and disasters to erase Saga from memory. Xu Fu's personality shifts with Saga's fate: desperate and volatile during decline, yet composed and cryptic during stability. He exhibits paternal care for adopted figures like Tae and Kiichi, deep loyalty to Yugiri, and pragmatic mentorship towards Kotaro. Millennia of existence grant him vast intellect, though his powers wane when Saga is threatened. A photograph in his bar confirms his enduring connection to Kiichi, Yugiri, and Saga's history. Unresolved aspects include his precise arrival in Saga from China, the full extent of his activities before the Meiji Era, and his role in the alien invasion cliffhanger threatening Saga.
