TV-Series
Description
Asteion is a specialized Intelligent Device that appears in the anime and manga Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha ViVid. It is created specifically for the young fighter Einhart Stratos by the members of the Yagami family. Hayate Yagami is responsible for developing its artificial intelligence system, Reinforce Zwei constructs the unit base, and Agito designs the outer coating. The Device makes its first appearance in chapter nineteen of the ViVid manga, where Hayate presents it to Einhart as a new tool to aid her in combat and in the upcoming Inter-Middle Championship.
The physical form of Asteion is notable for its unique and somewhat incongruous appearance, as it resembles a plush snow leopard. This design is not arbitrary; it is a deliberate homage to the snow leopards of Shutra, which were historically bred as soldiers and fighters by the family of Claus Ingvalt, an ancestor of its master. When activated, Asteion does not transform into a weapon or change its shape, functioning in a manner similar to Vivio's Device, Sacred Heart. Instead, it is absorbed into Einhart's body to provide enhanced auxiliary control. During Einhart's first Adult Mode setup with Asteion, the Device even alters her hairstyle in that form to match her usual look. Asteion communicates not through spoken language, but with cat-like meowing sounds, leading to its nicknames: Einhart calls it Tio, while Wendi Nakajima refers to it as Neko-nyan.
The name Asteion carries significant emotional weight. It is derived from the Greek word αστειον, meaning refined. In the story, it is revealed that the name originally belonged to a stillborn cub of two snow leopards owned by Claus Ingvalt. The name was chosen by Olivie Sägebrecht and was remembered by Einhart through the ancestral memories she inherits. By bestowing this name upon her Device, Einhart connects her present journey to the history and legacy of her predecessors.
In terms of functionality, Asteion has a clearly defined tactical role. It is noted by characters such as Dieci Nakajima and Viktoria Dahlgrun to be specialized in damage mitigation and recovery assistance. Its primary purpose is not to provide offensive support or amplify attack power, but rather to help its master endure longer in battle and recover from injuries. This focus on defense and sustainability makes it a perfect complement to Einhart's aggressive and powerful Kaiser Arts fighting style. The Device proves to have excellent compatibility with its master, enhancing her already formidable skills. Asteion plays a crucial supporting role in Einhart's development as a martial artist, allowing her to compete more effectively in tournaments and pursue her goal of proving the strength of her inherited battle style.
