Description
Chantez Arpinion is a character introduced in the manga Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha ViVid. She is a fourteen-year-old girl from Midchilda who holds the dual roles of a sister of the Saint Church and a Church Knight, serving as an apprentice to her senior, Schach Nouera.
In her daily life, Chantez has a somewhat mischievous and casual personality, although she is sincerely dedicated to fulfilling her religious duties. Her motivations are deeply rooted in personal gratitude. In her past, she was a troubled and wild youth, but Schach Nouera took her in and helped reform her through strict discipline, offering her a place within the Saint Church. This act of kindness instilled in Chantez a strong sense of loyalty, and her participation in martial arts tournaments is driven by a desire to repay her mentor for saving her.
Within the story, Chantez is a participant in the DSAA Intermiddle, a major tournament for young mages. She is closely associated with the main character Vivio Takamachi, whom she affectionately and respectfully calls "Her Majesty" due to Vivio's connection to the Church. Chantez cares a great deal for Vivio and engages her in a mock battle to help her understand the dangers of fighting against armed opponents, ultimately defeating Vivio when the latter agrees to only defend herself. Chantez also shares a close and playful friendship with her fellow Church sisters, particularly Sein, with whom she gets along so well that it causes concern for their teacher's well-being. In the tournament, she is eliminated in a match against the powerful fighter Viktoria Dahlgrun after a difficult battle.
Chantez is a high-speed swordfighter who employs an unconventional battle style using illusion and clone magic. She wields a Midchildan Armed Device named Phantasma, a pair of tonfa-shaped twin swords that are similar to her teacher's weapon. Her combat style is the Twin-Sword Arts, which relies heavily on her remarkable speed. She prefers hit-and-run and surprise tactics over direct, head-on clashes.
Her most notable ability is her clone spell, Ensemble. This musical-themed magic allows her to create multiple copies of herself to overwhelm an opponent. The variations of this spell increase in number and are named after musical group sizes, progressing from Duet and Trio, to Fantasia Quartet, and even up to an impressive Octodectet, which creates eighteen clones, and a final version called the Novemdectet, which creates nineteen. She also possesses a powerful magic-enhanced slashing attack called Twin Wheel Sword Dance, which is capable of breaking through strong defenses. Her barrier jacket during combat is notably revealing, a stark contrast to her role as a sister, which has been commented upon by other characters.
