Description
Claus G.S. Ingvalt is a significant historical figure in the world of Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha ViVid, known by the title of Hegemon of Shutra. He lived during the tumultuous era of the Ancient Belkan Saint King Unification War and is counted among the three great leaders of his age, alongside the Last Saint King, Olivie Sägebrecht, and Ixpellia, the Dark Ruler of Galea. By the time the main story of ViVid begins, he has long since passed away, with his exact date of death remaining uncertain. His legacy, however, is a driving force for the plot, primarily through his distant descendant, Einhart Stratos.
Ingvalt's background is rooted in royalty; he was born as the first prince of Shutra, an empire allied with the Saint Kings. His life took a pivotal turn when Olivie Sägebrecht was sent to Shutra as a political hostage. During this time, the two developed a profoundly close bond, the nature of which is described as unclear, possibly sibling-like or romantic, but it was a relationship strong enough to define the rest of his life. They became the strongest martial artists of their era, with Ingvalt himself being described as a warrior with the strength of a thousand men.
Personality-wise, Claus Ingvalt is presented as a figure haunted by failure and loss. Early in his life, he was bright and cheerful, but the horrors of war had a deep and corrosive effect on him. A specific tragedy, the burning of the Witch's Forest and the murder of his friend Crozelg's family, drove him to a killing spree out of rage and marked a decisive turn in his personality, making him noticeably darker. His core motivation, which he ultimately failed to achieve, was to obtain enough strength to protect the people and things he held dear. His greatest regret is his inability to stop Olivie from leaving to sacrifice herself in an attempt to end the war. In a moment of desperation, he tried to block her path but was overpowered, forced to watch helplessly as she departed, a memory that would haunt him forever. It is heavily implied that this failure to save her and end the conflict plagued him for the rest of his life and was a sorrow passed down through his bloodline.
In the story of ViVid, Ingvalt's role is entirely as a figure from the past whose influence is felt in the present. He does not appear as a living character but is seen in flashbacks and through the inherited memories of Einhart Stratos. These memories are so strong that Einhart feels his emotions, regrets, and fighting instincts as if they were her own, driving her to become stronger so she might fulfill the wish he could not: to protect what is precious. His memoirs, discovered in Lutecia Alpine's library, confirm that he died not long after Olivie.
Key relationships are central to his character. His bond with Olivie Sägebrecht is the most significant, encompassing friendship, rivalry, and a deep emotional connection. He was also a close comrade to Wilhelm Eremia, a knight who served Olivie, and together the three of them were a formidable and close-knit trio before the war escalated. His most important relationship in the context of the series is with his descendant, Einhart Stratos, who seeks to resolve the regrets he left behind.
Development-wise, Claus Ingvalt's journey is one of tragic disillusionment. He begins as a spirited prince and warrior, but the trauma of war transforms him into a grim and sorrowful ruler. His life is an arc from hope to despair, defined by a desperate pursuit of power that, once obtained, proved hollow because it could not restore what he had lost. He died on the battlefield as the Belkan Wars were ending, never having achieved his true desire.
Claus Ingvalt was an exceptionally powerful combatant, using the Ancient Belka magic system. He wielded a claymore, which may have been his Device, and possessed tremendous physical strength. His power was such that he and Olivie were considered the strongest fighters of their time. Many of his traits are hereditary, as his distant descendants, including Einhart, have been shown to inherit his silvery-green hair, heterochromia, prodigious magical talent, and even fragmented memories.
